Thoughts in Passing
Q: Who needs an author website?
A: Everyone who is writing and submitting their work for publication! Yes, even if you haven't been published yet. Trust me, it's easier to have it ready to go.

Q: What should be on an author website?
A: Well, that can get complicated. These are the basics, though:
* A contact form (if nothing else, this!)
* A press kit (including a headshot and bios of various lengths)
* A bio and greeting aimed at readers, not at press
* A newsletter sign-up
* A place to put your latest publications or other news, usually on the front page

Q: Abra, why are you thinking about this?
A: Because I'm in the process of making a new website. My decrepit ancient website (where you might be reading this!) has limped along for quite a while, despite there being various things I want to do that I can't because of the website host and framework. But now my contact form isn't even working, and what's the first, most important thing a website needs? A contact form, that's right! So I'm in the process of building a new website and transferring the domain name over. This is not as simple as it should be, because my current website is a legacy website on a legacy host that was bought out and is being run as a passive no-investment moneymaking venture. But I'm working on it.

Q: Back to author websites, then. What can be on an author website beyond the basics?
A: I am still thinking about that, and about what I want to be on mine! Here are a few other ideas:
* A progress meter for works-in-progress
* Release schedule
* Events
* A full bibliography with links (I have this on the current website)
* A bibliography sorted by type of thing ("if you like science fiction"), with excerpts. Linking new releases to old ones may be more effective.
* Book/series pages, with excerpts and buy links
* A feed from Twitter (only if your Twitter is generally entertainment and/or writing oriented)
* A new releases + old releases blog
* Weekly update (a la Sanderson)
* An author newsletter archive ... or an archive of a repeating feature from that newsletter (like recipes, or book reviews, or--something else reader-oriented)
* Free fiction
* FAQs
* Interviews and reviews
* If there's a long-running series or large universe, a wiki?
* Goodreads review feed (of what the author is reading)
* Videos of readings
* Audio recordings / podcasts
* Multiple newsletter sign-up prompts--with graphics

What else would YOU like to see on the website of an author that you love? Reply to this email and let me know.

(Do you have a writing question? Send it to me, either by replying to this email or by using the comment form on my website, and it may get answered in the next newsletter.)

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

Tooooo much research about CERN and the LHC and ATLAS and MARPLE ... wait, that last one only exists in my story. So far.

Featured Market

Little Blue Marble wants climate fiction, pays CAD$.11/word, has an open submission window until July 31, 2022.

What we're looking for: We publish speculative fiction that examines humanity's possible futures living with anthropogenic climate change. We prefer fiction with a hopeful outlook, but the occasional dystopia might fit too. While science is an important piece for solving the climate change puzzle, we challenge writers to also examine our existing social, cultural, political, and economic frameworks and envision new ones to help see us through to a better, more sustainable world.

Basics: climate fiction, up to 2,000 words (5,000 for reprints), CAD$.11/wd, accepts reprints.
Guidelines: https://littlebluemarble.ca/submission-guidelines/

Thoughts in Passing
Another year, another December newsletter getting sent out in January! I really should learn to just send it out as early as possible. This year my schedule was complicated by back-to-back WorldCon and visiting family for Christmas and a self-assigned deadline of finishing a short story before Dec 31st. Yes, I succeeded in all of the above! Thanks to vax+booster and my KN95 masks, I even made it through safely despite flying out of DC when they were spiking and visiting Kansas when they had a 50% test positivity rate.Yikes!

Recently, in the SFWA Sunday Zoom writing date*, another writer discussed the difference between aspirations and goals. I'm a very goal-driven person myself. In some ways that limits my scope, because goals have to be things within my control. My writing goals for 2022 are to collect 200 agent rejections and/or one (1) agent, and (in sequence) to write four new short stories, the next novella sequel to Unkindness of Ravens, and to begin my space junkyard SF novel.

My aspirations? The usual, I expect. Awards, an agent, book deals, being a convention guest. So, I found something really cool to help mark achieving aspirations! Christie Yant's Tools for Writers has a Career Bingo (and a daily wordtracker calendar, among other great thigngs). Check it out here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1R9IRbolmTr42z-9l7kN9tN0De7WTDGmXv3jbVhM_kXk/edit#gid=797426584

* Writing date open to SFWA members and anyone who registers for the Nebulas.

(Do you have a writing question? Send it to me, either by replying to this email or by using the comment form on my website, and it may get answered in the next newsletter.)

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

I finished and submitted that solarpunk fairy tale, and I'm counting that as my first short story of the year (hey, I finished it after Solstice). Now I am starting to think about a short involving Elvis and the Hadron Collider. Most of all, I need to take stock.

From reprints of classics like the D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths to retellings of the Iliad, Odyssey, and the Aeneid by everyone from Ursula K. Le Guin to Madeline Miller, writers are continually fascinated and readers are continually compelled by these stories. But while we know today that the Greco-Roman world was international and diverse in racial, ethnic, and sexual identities, this is hardly reflected in the retellings we have. Readers of all backgrounds are actively looking for inclusive, broad-ranging, cross-genre retellings; it’s time to give them their favorite myths with a new twist.

Basics: all genres, themed, 5,000 - 10,000 words, $1,500 flat rate, no reprints, due 2/1/2022.

Thoughts in Passing
'Tis the season! Which season, you might ask? Why, it's end-of-year awards eligibility and best-of season!

That's right. If you've had any publications this year, now is the time to announce them! It might feel a little awkward at first, but think of it this way. It's really easy to miss things, even things you might be interested in. Even things you might really love! This is giving people another chance to not miss out on your awesome creation.

And it doesn't have to be only about you! A year-end roundup of things you enjoyed and made (writing or otherwise) is a great idea, and a great way to share with others. My end-of-year post includes short stories and books I enjoyed reading, and even my favorite new recipe from this year.

Ahem.

I only had one short story published this year, “Fear of a Stuntwoman” (Fireside Magazine, September 2021, 2,953 words). I am very proud of it! A divorced stuntwoman does what she has to in order to provide for her child. Warning: here there be unsexy, horrifying vampires. Free to read here: https://firesidefiction.com/fear-of-a-stuntwoman

Yes, “Fear of a Stuntwoman” is eligible for fantasy/horror short story awards for 2021. If you nominate or vote in such things, please consider it!

Featured Market

CatsCast (Escape Artists) wants cat-themed speculative fiction, pays $.08/word for originals, $100 for reprints, due 2/1/2022.

CatsCast is looking for fun speculative cat stories! A CatsCast story should leave cat-loving listeners a little happier after listening than they were before.

Specifically, we’re looking for speculative fiction stories about cats. “Cats” in this context are, well, cats — but since this is a speculative fiction podcast, they don’t have to be exactly the same species as the housecats we have here on Earth. The stories should have happy, or at least hopeful, endings for all featured cats. Humor is strongly encouraged but not required.

Basics: all speculative fiction, 6,000 words max, $.08/word for originals, $100 for reprints, due 2/1/2022.
Guidelines: https://escapeartists.net/catscast/catscast-submission-guidelines/

New Markets Update October 2021: ☀️ Solarpunk Magazine wants optimistic climate-themed SF, and other Aswiebe's Market List updates!

Thoughts in Passing
What kind of a writer are you? Not, "What genre do you write in?" but how do you write best? What time of day do the words seem to flow? Are you a slow-and-steady writer or a binge writer? Do you work best when you have large chunks of time to concentrate, or with frequent breaks? At home, in a library, or at a coffee shop?

For the last couple of months, for various reasons, I've been taking 20-minute breaks at the top of every writing hour to focus on other projects. Inevitably, the 20 minutes becomes 25. And even when I am working on writing and making progress the rest of the time, at the end of the day it feels like I didn't get as much done as I should have. On the other hand... On weekends when I took a 3-hour block of time to go write in the park, I got more done than in a regular full day.

Yep. This confirms something I already knew! I work best in long, concentrated periods of time.

But...other projects still have to get done. What to do?

Moving forward, I am blocking 3 solid hours a day to only work on writing projects. No social media, no email, no chores or other projects. Only bathroom and get-more-tea breaks. I actually *gasp* logged out of Facebook and Twitter! Yes, it's possible.

Although a lot of writers work best when they get their writing done first thing in the morning, before their brain gets filled with "life stuff," I am not a morning person no matter how much coffee I drink. I have always found it easiest to get into a flow state in the afternoon. So my dedicated work time is from 1 PM - 4 PM. I try to "clear my palate" before starting by reading a print book during lunch and then walking my dog (without using my cellphone to listen to podcasts, play Pokemon Go, etc.).

Those projects that I was alternating with writing? Well, now I'm working on them for longer periods of time outside my best writing time.

I know I'm very lucky to be able to set my writing schedule during the day. But even if you have job or childcare constraints on your schedule, try to figure out what your ideal writing conditions are. Then rearrange what you can, when you can, to get as close as you can. That's all any of us can do, really!

(Do you have a writing question? Send it to me, either by replying to this email or by using the comment form on my website, and it may get answered in the next newsletter.)

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

I finished the major revisions on my current novel, and I did it by my self-imposed deadline! This is very exciting. I've drafted a query letter that I'm about to begin sending out to agents. You can expect to see more articles about agents and querying pop up in the Shiny and Useful section, because that's what I'm reading a lot of right now!

As far as what's next for writing, I'll take a little while to write some short stories, because I like having those out there. Then there's a long-delayed sequel that needs writing, just as soon as I decide which direction I want to go with it first.

Featured Market

Solarpunk Magazine wants optimistic climate-themed SF, pays $.08/word, is open for submissions 11/1/21 - 11/14/21.

However, the time has never been more urgent for an explosion of utopian stories to light a path forward out of the darkness into which humanity has dug itself.

We need more fiction and poetry about amazing technological advancements of the future that work in harmony with nature. We need stories about sustainable communities that thrive on cooperation and mutual aid rather than competition and profit. We need to build utopias with pen and page where capitalism and its social ills such as white supremacy, patriarchy, and massive wealth disparity are things of the past. In short, we need more literature that envisions a better future.

With that in mind Solarpunk Magazine will publish short stories and poetry that tell stories of such utopian endeavors, as well as nonfiction that explores various real world, contemporary topics and their intersection with the solarpunk movement.

Basics: SF, 500 - 7,500 words, $.08/word, no reprints
Guidelines: https://solarpunkmagazine.com/submissions/

Thoughts in Passing
The September edition of Aswiebe's Market List is really sneaking just under the wire! Let my delay be a lesson to you: when you are budgeting your time to work on a longer-term deadline (like book edits), make sure you also schedule time to work on more-urgent, smaller projects (like a newsletter). Or the smaller project may just keep not getting done until it is very, very much later than usual.

(Do you have a writing question? Send it to me, either by replying to this email or by using the comment form on my website, and it may get answered in the next newsletter.)

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

I'm very proud to announce that my single mom, deal-with-a-vampire story, "Fear of a Stuntwoman," is now out from Fireside Magazine! It is free to read, or you can buy the whole issue. Initial reviews are good!

"A fascinating take on vampires as a divorced mom and stuntwoman finds an...unconventional way to give herself an edge in stunting, though one that requires a great deal of thought and effort to make work. All because of a chance encounter/attack on set that leads to something wonderful, but also something intensely dangerous. The piece looks at fear and euphoria, at parenting and the requirements to staying independent in a capitalist and unjust society, and it does it with style. A fantastic read! Vampires, Stunts, Parenting, Garlic, Bargains. CW- Drug Use/Euphoria, Child in Peril, Blood Drinking." - Quick Sip Reviews

Thoughts in Passing
So here's a trick you can do to get better at writing ... that doesn't involve practicing fiction writing. Read 20 books. Not only the award-winning books in your genre (read those, too, but not all for this exercise), not the newest hot releases, not even only books in your genre. Don't even read the books all the way through. Go to your local library and pick an assortment of 20 books off the shelves. Do not read the back cover copy. Do not try to find books to your tastes. Grab a few from each genre: mystery/thriller, romance, mainstream, YA, SF/fantasy/horror, western, classics.

Go home, pick up a book, grab a notebook and pen, and start reading. In the first 25 pages, does it hook you enough to want to keep reading? When? How? Was it plot, word-craft, character, questions unanswered, worldbuilding, something else? If it didn't, why not? What were you looking for that you didn't find? How do you feel about the main character(s)? Why? What would have made you feel differently? Are there any relationships (romantic or otherwise) that you want to know more about? How about the setting? Does it affect the story's appeal (for you) at all? Why or why not?  Were there any points where you got mad, frustrated, or so bored that you just wanted to stop reading? When you kept reading, did that urge to stop reading change at any point? Why? Make notes, including page numbers.

Flip to the end of the book. Read the last 10 pages (not including epilogues). What do you see that connects to the beginning? What do you see that seems totally disconnected? Have the characters had an internal change or do they seem the same? Are the tone and mood different or the same as at the beginning? How about the setting?

Take your time to read through the beginning of all the books and take your notes (but remember the library due dates!). Finish the books if you like (why?), stop after 25 pages if you don't (why?). After you've gone through *all* the books, set aside a couple of hours to sit down to read all your notes and flip through to the key points of *all* the books. Try to do this in one chunk of time.

That's it. Your brain will figure out patterns, because that's what humans do. Pay attention. For bonus points, read the first 25 pages of your novel in progress immediately after the big notes review.

(Do you have a writing question? Send it to me, either by replying to this email or by using the comment form on my website, and it may get answered in the next newsletter.)

Featured Market
Mysterion wants science fiction, fantasy, and horror that engages with Christianity, pays $.08/word, open to submissions until July 31st.

  • The story must have a speculative element. It needs something beyond the everyday. We love science fiction and fantasy, enjoy good ghost stories, and think there's great fiction material hidden in the mysteries of Christian theology--cherubim, leviathan, nephilim, visions, prophecy, and more.
  • The story must engage with Christianity. We want stories with Christian characters whose faith affects their actions, with Christian themes such as grace and redemption, or with a Christian view of the supernatural. Note that we're not saying that you must be a Christian. We are not in a position to judge your faith and won't try, and we welcome submissions from authors of all backgrounds and perspectives. Nor does your story need to be unambiguously pro-Christian. If you can tell a good story that meaningfully engages with Christianity, we want to read it.
  • We publish accepted stories submitted in January between July and December that year, and stories submitted in July between January and June of the next year. If your story is seasonal (Christmas, Easter, Presidents' Day), please take this into consideration.

  • Basics: SF, fantasy, and horror, 1 - 9,000 words, pays $.08/word, accepts reprints ($.04/word), annual submission periods in January, July.

    Thoughts in Passing
    I'm neck-deep in revisions right now, and it's reminded me of my favorite trick for making sure that the beginning of a story pops. I pretend that I have one paragraph to persuade someone to read the rest of my story. I'll read from the beginning of the story until I hit that one paragraph that really speaks for the story. This can be a dramatic moment, or a bit of foreshadowing, or a great character bit. My job then is to figure out how to get that one paragraph moved up to within the first three paragraphs of the beginning--ideally the first paragraph.

    I was worried because the novella I'm revising doesn't have the horror plot kick into gear for the first several pages. I didn't have that poppin' paragraph. But then I thought of the main character and what her deep motivation is, and I found that paragraph. It was the 6th paragraph, but I can easily move it up to the top.

    Taylor raised her champagne flute as if she were toasting someone across the room, so it might look like she had a friend here. "Happy New Year," she whispered, quietly enough that none of the other party guests would hear. "Maybe next year, I'll actually have someone to toast with."

    (Do you have a writing question? Send it to me, either by replying to this email or by using the comment form on my website, and it may get answered in the next newsletter.)

    What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

    I've paused in revising my urban fantasy novel, so that I can revise my horror novella. I have such an itch to write new words, but I gotta get it done. Deadlines help me a lot in getting work to that polished, submission-ready stage. In this case, I'm revising the horror novella to submit to Nightfire's novel and novella submission call. It's open until June 22nd: https://tornightfire.com/nightfire-slush-submission-guidelines/

    I can think of all sorts of reasons why they won't buy my novella (too short, maybe not the right tone...), so why am I pushing to revise and submit it anyway?
    1. Don't self-reject. That is not your job.
    2.The work of improving a story is never wasted. If they don't buy it, I can submit it somewhere else. If nobody else buys it, I have something I could self-publish. If it is never published, the work of revising it still improved my writing and editing skills.

    The James White Award gives Ł200 plus publication in Interzone for one non-pro SF writer.

    The aim of the competition is to highlight new writers. It is open to writers of any age and nationality, but it is not open to professional authors.

    For the purposes of this competition a “professional author” is defined as a writer with three short story sales to a professional level market or one professionally published novel. We encourage authors who are unsure about their status to contact the competition before submitting a story. Please use the form on the “Contact Us” page.

    Stories must be in English and must be between 2,000 and 6,000 words in length. The James White Award does not consider flash fiction or novels. Stories outside these words will be disqualified.

    Stories should be Science Fiction (though we will take a broad definition of what that term means).

    Stories may not have been entered in The James White Award in any previous year.

    Stories may not feature characters/locations/ etc. that are part of other copyrighted works – i.e. nothing set in the universes of Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, Dr Who, etc.

    Basics: SF, 2,000 - 6,000 words, no entry fee, pays 1st prize Ł200, due 6/28/2021.

    Thoughts in Passing
    Today I watched an interview that Minnesota Speculative Fiction Writers did with Bryan Thao Worra, and a few things he said really struck home. (I am paraphrasing, of course.)

    Figure out how to write in a way that nobody else can. What makes your writing unique to you? Do more of that. Sure, you could imitate another writer in the hopes that someday she'll get sick and you'll be the lucky understudy called up from the wings, but do you really want that?

    Create generative work. Perfection is a trap, and there is no perfect work. A rough cut marble may be more powerful. What can you create that will inspire others to create--even if it's to argue with you or prove that they can do it better?

    Give yourself the freedom to try new things. Try different modes of creative expression. The benefits you reap may not be direct, they may take decades to reach, but they may also be what leads to something great.

    If you can't get your work seen following ordinary approaches, try something else. Bryan was referring to submitting his poetry to publications outside the USA instead of to North American literary journals, but this applies more broadly.

    The whole interview was recorded. I'll provide the link when it's available.

    (Do you have a writing question? Send it to me, either by replying to this email or by using the comment form on my website, and it may get answered in the next newsletter.)

    What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:
    I'm delighted to announce that "The Dinosaur's Valentine," my bittersweet little story about life and love and what we leave behind us, has been published in the Best Vegan Science Fiction & Fantasy of 2020.
    Dinosaur's Valentine - Best Vegan F&SF 2020

    Over at Escape Pod, you can listen to me narrating "Annotated Setlist of the Mikaela Cole Jazz Quintet," by Catherine George. This is a heart-wrenching but ultimately hopeful SF story of a generation ship that never planned to travel for so long.

    Finally, I've started hosting virtual co-working writing sessions on the 3rd Wednesday of the month (one's coming up in two days!). This is for MinnSpec, a Minnesota SFF writers' group. If you're in Minnesota and want some writing accountability, check it out: https://www.meetup.com/MinnSpec/events/xjzfhsycchbzb/

    Sapiens Plurum's annual short fiction contest wants optimistic near-future environmental fiction, awards $1,000 for 1st place.

    One Health is an effort by the CDC that recognizes the connection among the health of people, animals and the environment to achieve optimal health outcomes. You can learn more about One Health here. The One Health concept is the basis for this year’s contest.

    The news today is full of stories of disease and environmental destruction. We ask authors to imagine a world in which technology has improved One Health —  the health of the environment, humans, and all living things.

    Let the reader see this future world through your eyes. Let us see how people — whatever that means — try to live in harmony with the natural world and society, how they maintain their own health and happiness, how they overcome challenges. But most of all, tell a good story, with characters we care about, setting, conflict, and resolution.

    Your story should be consonant with the Sapiens Plurum mission: to inspire us — the first species that can intentionally impact its own evolution — to aspire beyond what was humanly possible.

    Basics: SF, 1,500 - 3,000 words, no entry fee, pays 1st prize $1,000, 2nd prize $500, 3rd prize $300, due 5/31/2021.

    Thoughts in Passing
    If I don't figure out a time to do a thing, the thing isn't going to get done. In my life in general, I've found two strategies that help.

    Big Rocks! Imagine that you need to fit a big rock into a jar. You also have pebbles and sand that you want to use some of. If you put the pebbles and sand in first, you might end up with no room in the jar for the big rock. But if you put the big rock in first, you can fill around the rock with pebbles, and then sand. You'll fill the jar right up to the top. Your time is the jar. Your most important task is the big rock.

    Pairing! Sometimes it's easier to establish a habit by pairing it with something else that you are already doing (especially something you like to do). For example, I've started pairing doing yoga with eating lunch. No, not at the same time! I set an alarm and always do yoga for the half an hour before lunch. If you have a particularly difficult writing-related task, try pairing it with something else you are already doing. Maybe that's as simple as, "I get to make my coffee after I write my first sentence."

    So there you go. Pair your rocks!

    (Do you have a writing question? Send it to me, either by replying to this email or by using the comment form on my website, and it may get answered in the next newsletter.)

    What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:
    This weekend I'm attending Flights of Foundry, an online con. It's great! I'm enjoying the panels, have participated in several coworking sessions (a great addition to a con!), and have been seized with story inspirations. It's not too late for you to participate, either. Sales end Sunday. Most of the panels are recorded on YouTube and will remain up for a while after the convention, so get a membership now and watch the panels when you can (direct links are provided in the schedule). https://flights-of-foundry.org/registration/

    Thoughts in Passing
    For the first time in almost a year, I am alone in my house on an ordinary day. My spouse is working on-site today, and the kids are at in-person school. It is HEAVEN. And I am trying to figure out where to start digging myself out from the mound of all the projects that I have neglected. Fortunately (or unfortunately), I have played the "getting back into the groove" game before, after recovering from injuries and surgeries and newborns. I'm guessing a lot of people will emerge from the pandemic and need to work on recovering their productivity and getting back into writing. If you've been able to keep writing and keep on top of your projects during this time, that's GREAT. You should be proud. If you haven't been able to, well, maybe me sharing my process will help. WARNING: extreme productivity geeking-out below, feel free to skip!

    Step 1 is simply figuring out where I'm at. This step will take a while.

    I tend to use my email as a to-do dumping ground. I use "action needed-writing" and "action urgent" email tags to flag these to-dos. That's not enough organization to really keep on top of things, although it does make it easier to find them. List organization isn't quite enough either. This is where the spreadsheet comes in. You knew there'd be a spreadsheet, right?

    It's pretty simple. The Type column is how I prioritize my tasks. Paying gigs come first, followed by things I've promised to other people (I'm careful not to take on too many of these), and everything else is intuitively sorted by the Eisenhower Decision Matrix. There is a number at the beginning of each Type label so that I can sort the tasks in order, first by Type and then by Deadline.

    If you are a natural-born procrastinator like me, this is a good time to pay attention to what you've been procrastinating on the hardest. Often it falls in that critical "Action Important & Non-Urgent" category.

    I also add significant writing projects that have deadlines. I enjoy writing for a particular submission call, so that is where a lot of these deadlines come from initially. This is not the place to track all my various manuscripts in different stages of writing and editing and submitting (again, unless deadlines apply). I track those elsewhere. Scheduling blocked time for writing/editing outside of this task spreadsheet is essential.

    One final productivity note! As I go through my email "to-dos," I try to apply the 2-minute principle. If it would take me 2 minutes to do, it doesn't go on the list. It gets done then.

    Next month, I'll talk about scheduling and how getting things done is going. I have 288 "action-needed - writing" emails in my inbox, so wish me luck!

    (Do you have a writing question? Send it to me, either by replying to this email or by using the comment form on my website, and it may get answered in the next newsletter.)

    What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

    After Dinner Conversations has produced a podcast discussing the ethics and free will implications of "In Their Image." This is just so cool! If you are philosophically inclined, you can listen to at https://www.afterdinnerconversation.com/podcast/e38-in-their-image-what-happens-when-a-teddy-bear-cant-find-its-purpose or on your favorite podcast catcher.

    My final reminder is that awards nomination season is wrapping up. If you are eligible to nominate, I am very fond of my small bittersweet story about love in the time of extinction, "The Dinosaur's Valentine." It's available to read at Daily Science Fiction or to listen to at Centropic Oracle.

    Featured Market
    DreamForge Anvil wants positive stories of science fiction, fantasy, and even horror, pays $.06/wd.

    The biggest thing to know is that this reading period, our maximum word length is 4,500 words. We’re looking for positive stories of science fiction, fantasy, and speculative fiction. Horror is a stretch for us, but occasionally an unusual one with an upbeat ending makes it through.

    ... For every story we accept, we’ll provide two other hopeful contributors with the same level of detailed notes that we provide to the hidden gems we choose to work with. These will be chosen at random so that authors with a wide range of skill sets and experience can receive some feedback. We might not be able to publish your story, but perhaps we can help you improve its chances elsewhere.

    Basics: positive speculative fiction, up to 4,500 words, pays $.06/word, reprints okay. 2021 submission window closes 03/13/2021.

    Thoughts in Passing
    I recently saw a writer posting in distress. They had taken their work to a critique group, where they learned that they wrote with a lot of "filler movement." What does that mean? It means the bits that happen between the action. Opening and closing doors. Walking across a room. Getting out of a car. Traveling somewhere. Getting out a bowl to pour cereal in. Picking up the phone. Opening an envelope. Turning on the lights. Turning on a computer. Unlocking a phone. Getting dressed in the morning.

    You get the idea. All of these things can be written as plot-critical, but they usually aren't. And that's okay.

    This distressed writer asked how they could stop writing these extraneous bits. I can't answer that question, because I do it too. I often find that I can't move a character from Point A to Point B without writing how they moved there. My visual storytelling brain can't handle it. Otherwise, I might as well have them popping in and out of existence.

    In short stories, there's less room for that. But hey, that's what editing is for! Sometimes? You just have to write through something, even if you know you'll take it out in editing. And that's okay!

    (Do you have a writing question? Send it to me, either by replying to this email or by using the comment form on my website, and it may get answered in the next newsletter.)

    What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:
    Oof. Not much this month, aside from my regular #vss365 writing exercises. I have a lot in edits, and a lot of general writing-related administrivia to catch up on. Next month (in 17 days!) my kids start going back to in-person school (for however long that lasts). I have so much stuff that supervising distance learning shoved to the back burner, in writing and in general household management and in other life stuff, that I don't even know where to begin. We've been in distance learning for 10 months here, since mid-March 2020. I start by making lists of things to catch up on, I guess.
