Drawing is supposedly my best area, and I guess I would have to agree if I were only judging myself on technical skill. Still, I'm hoping to learn how to develop the "expressiveness" of my drawings. Back to nine muses.

Dave

8" x 10" conte crayon. Ex-boyfriend, and most faithful portrait. Enough said. This one was shown briefly at the reception on April 30, 2000, for finalists in the Arts and Humanities Association of Johnson County Shooting Stars scholarship.

Black and brown

22" x 28" conte crayon. This is my favorite life drawing, and one of the best. This is kinda what I was talking about, making my drawings more creative, instead of just looking good, like the one below. I submitted this piece and my pewter sculpture to the Lenexa Arts Council for their scholarship competition and ended up winning the first place prize. I also entered it in the Lenexa Artists show at city hall my first year in college, and won second place and $500.

Life drawing #1

18" x 24" charcoal. This is the last life drawing that I did during the open studio sessions. I guess I just figured that it wouldn't get any better than this, although that's a lousy attitude to have. It did, however, win an honorable mention at Scholastics.

Box drawing

11" x 13" conte crayon. It isn't quite apparent from this picture, but this is drawn on the inside of a cardboard box lid. It makes sort of a nice little frame. Both this drawing and the last one are of the same model, who I saw far too much of at the life drawing class I was attending at the time. This piece won a silver key at Scholastics my senior year.

Sculptural man

18" x 24" charcoal. Another drawing from the life drawing class. It got its name from a comment made by one of the ladies there; it was sort of a compliment, and unique enough to become the piece's working title.
