Normally I don't do very much work in three dimensions, but recently I've been learning different techniques and find it pretty challenging. Although it sounds arrogant, when I work in two-dimensions it's almost like I'm trapped by the fact that I'm good at it, and in sculpture I have more freedom because I'm not good at it. Anyway, I'm sure my friend Will the Sculptor would be proud of me. Back to nine muses.

Untitled (impetus/vulnerability)

2" x 2" x 7" pewter sculpture using lost-wax method. "...And I'd like to thank the Academy..." I worked really hard on this one and after the anxiety of the pouring, I really feel like I bonded with this piece. It won a gold key at Scholastics my senior year. I also sent it along with my "Black and brown" piece to the Lenexa Arts Council scholarship competition and ended up winning the first prize. I'm now happily reunited with it after sending it out to so many different places.

Character tree

5" x 8" x 7" paper/mixed media construction. This is my pathetic attempt at inserting some underlying meaning into my work, instead of just style. I stopped having ideas with it after a while, so it just sat on my drawing table for three monthes. Actually, it did win an honorable mention at Scholastics my senior year. I'd forgotten.

Flora and fauna

7" x 10" mixed media sculpture, wooden cross and copper mask. This is not the most recent piece I've done for the Art of the Mask auction. I unfortunately did not get any pictures of the mask I made this year. The auction is held annually and proceeds go to the Maddie Rhodes Art Center. Every year our National Art Honor Society sends several masks made by its members into the silent auction. My senior year I along with my friend Leslie Chicoine had the honor of having our pieces chosen to be part of the live auction. This piece also was pictured in a feature the Kansas City Star Magazine did on the Art of the Mask auction. That's actually why this picture is so crappy, it's taken from the newsprint.

Vase

12" x 12" x 24" ceramic pot. This is a pot that I made my freshman or sophomore year in a ceramics class. The shape is supposed to be sort of organic and somewhat suggestive of say, a calla lily, and the coloring was kind of inspired by Georgia O'Keefe. I love her paintings because they're so grand in scale and the colors are incredible. I guess I put a lot of "love" into this one, because even now when I move it I hold it like a small child and safety-belt it into my car. And crush kevin's manhood with it.
