Sorenstam, 34, admitted recently that she might have retired at the end of the year had she won all four majors in 2004. ³Maybe thatıs a little greedy,² she said. ³But that would have been it.² A loss in the yearıs first major, the Nabisco Championship in March, rendered the plan obsolete, but it has not lessened the resolve of the tourıs best player. Indeed, Sorenstam, who has won six major championships, took three weeks off from competitive play to ³recharge my batteries,² she said, so she can make a strong run the remaining three majors. She finished tied for 10th in last week's Chick-fil-A Charity Championship in Stockbridge, Ga. ³I want to win the next three [majors],² she said. ³Itıs going to be tough. So far Iım happy with the season Iıve had. . . . Itıs a little frustrating. Iıve won three of four tournaments, and I would trade the three for the one [major]. ³But it makes you practice and really appreciate what it takes to win a major.² Annika Sorenstam, 34, has won six LPGA major championships in her career. ------------------------------------------------------------ Questions? ASK THE PRO 2. IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR GAME - Sculpt Your Shoulders - Easily 3. THE GOLF DOCTOR - ARM SHOULD BE BOWED BUT NOT BENT ASK THE PRO Q: I have trouble determining what the width of my stance should be. I keep experimenting; sometimes I use a narrow stance, and it works for a while and then stops working. Sometimes I do well with a wide stance, but that doesn't last either. How can I find out which one is right for me? Or is it important at all? Maybe I'm making too big a deal out of it. -- Al C., from the Web A: The width of your stance is important. It influences your stability, balance and mobility. The rule of thumb is your foot spread should be no wider than shoulder width (for your driver); the narrowest is the width of your hips (short irons). To determine the best width for you, chose a 5-iron and take a few slow-motion swings in front of a mirror, posing in your finish position. Then (assuming you are a right-handed player) check out your right knee position. If your right knee passes your left, your stance is too narrow. If there is a gap between your knees, your stance is too wide. Your stance is correct when your knees end up even with each other. Once you determine the stance width for the 5-iron, your stance should be slightly narrower for clubs that are shorter than the 5-iron and slightly wider for the longer ones. It is my experience that most golfers take too wide a stance because it feels powerful. Actually, it's just the opposite because too wide a stance makes it difficult to transfer weight into the left hip socket on the downswing, a mistake that causes the "fire and fall back" finish -- a sure way to hit the power-robbing slice. To find out more on stance width and how to match it to your body type, consult my book "The LAWs of the Golf Swing." ------------------------------------------------------------ ATTENTION LADIES: Look Like A Diva Without Spending Like A Diva The Limited Edition Designer Inspired Purse Collection If you've ever wanted to own a designer purse but did not want to pay the outrageous prices, you have to check out this Designer Inspired Collection. To simplify your comprehension of these muscles, we will divide this area into three parts: the front deltoids, the side or middle deltoids, and the rear deltoids. It's like with any other muscle group; a well-balanced workout focusing on all three parts of your shoulders will increase muscle growth and muscle definition. Also, remember to keep your diet in check in order to raise your likelihood of developing well-rounded, buff shoulders. To keep your workout short and sweet, carry out 3 or 4 exercises for a total of 14 sets. We'll start with a basic exercise that concentrates on building the front and side deltoid muscles. shoulder press with dumbbells This movement is similar to the military press, except you'll be using dumbbells. By using these weights you'll achieve a tremendous range of motion, which helps stretch out the muscles while working more muscle fibers in the shoulder area. Here are your goals in terms of sets and repetitions. Sets: 4 Repetitions: 15 - 10 - 8 - 8 Technique: Sit on an upright bench (or 90 degree chair), with your feet firmly on the floor to ensure proper balance. Hold a dumbbell in each hand next to your shoulders, keeping elbows out and palms and fingers facing the wall or mirror. Your forearms should be perpendicular to the floor. Make sure your back is upright and resting against the back of the bench with your shoulders back and your chest sticking out. Press the dumbbells straight up overhead, but don't lock your elbows at the end of the motion, in order to maintain full tension on your shoulder muscles. Slowly lower the weights to the starting position. A good tip is to point the dumbbells inwards (towards your shoulders) when coming down. This focuses the tension of the movement to your shoulders. Make your waist look smaller with more shoulder exercises... ------------------------------------------------------------ The EVERLight - The No Fuel, No Flame Lighter That Lasts ForEVER The EVERLight is now available to the general public. VISIT: The EVERLight ------------------------------------------------------------ THE GOLF DOCTOR ARM SHOULD BE BOWED BUT NOT BENT If you're an experienced golfer, you know that at the top of the backswing your lead arm (the left arm for right- handed players) should not collapse. An excessively bent left arm changes the radius of the swing arc, making it more difficult to return the club head to the ball correctly. However, a stiff left arm that is ram-rod straight adds too much tension to your swing and can lead to elbow problems. A stiff left arm makes it difficult to sequence the downswing correctly (it should unfold from the ground up), and it stifles the power-producing centrifugal force that helps accelerate the target arm through impact. At the top of your backswing, your target arm should be extended, but not stiff, as LPGA Futures Tour player Kristi Gleason is demonstrating in this photo. Her left arm is stretched by applying pressure during the takeaway with the heel of her right hand where it touches her left thumb. Because she pushes down and away with her right hand throughout her backswing, Kristi maintains maximum width all the way to the top of her swing. This leaves her left arm "soft" and ready for action. In golfspeak this is what we call a perfect left arm -- "bowed, but not bent, straight but not stiff." -- T.J.
