Q:
Why on July 4th?
A:
Hilltop House Hotel in Harpers Ferry is a popular place for conferences and
weddings. Their banquet and meeting facilities are booked for all the
spring and fall months about a year in advance.
Q: Why in Harpers Ferry, WV?
A: It is on the East Coast
where the vast majority of alumni live and work. It is close to three
major airports and is only 45 minutes away from Washington, DC. It is a
great place for a great price. The Hilltop House Hotel is a historic 19th
Century building that overlooks the mountains and the two rivers below.
The spectacular views from the hotel are complimented by the historic town of
Harpers Ferry, which has changed little since the 1800’s. Steeped in history as
well as beauty, Harpers Ferry was the starting point of the American Civil War.
The town is preserved as a
National Historical Park, and has
a host of museums and tours relating to the Civil War Era. We spent
several weeks asking friends and searching the Internet for a perfect location
before committing to Hilltop House Hotel in Harpers Ferry.
Q: What is on the agenda?
A:
The list of available
activities
includes swimming, rafting, tubing, fishing, kayaking, hiking,
activities for children, shopping at local arts and crafts stores, visiting
local historic places and museums, a bus tour to Washington,
and a dinner banquet with live music (classic and folk).
More detailed information will follow as we approach the date.
Q: Can I bring my own drinks?
A: Good question. If you
bring you own liquor to the banquet, it will be served by a bartender for a
$10.00 corking fee per bottle of vodka and $5 per bottle of wine. We are going to buy
the drinks in bulk from the hotel.
They will serve Inglenook Vineyards Chablis, Burgundy and Blush and Champagne
Punch during the banquet. Also an extensive selection of drinks is
available from the Hotel Bar.
Q: Who will be babysitting
the young children during the banquet?
A: Please bring books, art
supplies and games to entertain children
during the banquet. So far no specific plans have been made to organize
activities for children and teenagers separate from the activities for adults
(except for drinking of course). We can have a separate room for kids
during the banquet and if you know somebody who would like to volunteer as a
Children Activities Coordinator, please let us know.
Q: Should my offspring be
considered a child or an adult for different payments?
A: It depends. You should pay
$10.00 for the banquet for each kid under age 10, and $20.00 for a "kid" under age
21. If you are renting a hotel room, add $5.00 for each "kid" under
21.
