90) Walt Disney Treasures: The Complete Goofy

The highlight of 2002's wave of limited edition Walt Disney Treasure Tins, The Complete Goofy contains forty-six shorts spanning thirty-two years, all featuring the wacky innocence of the clumsy cartoon canine. One can observe how the character of Goofy and the art of animation evolves as Goofy tries to master sports and manage road rage over the years. The Leonard Maltin-hosted supplements are nice, but the lack of a "Play All" feature is troubling. Best to snag this one before they're all off store shelves and fetching premiums on eBay; only 125,000 were produced.

89) Independence Day: Five Star Collection

One of the most successful blockbusters of the '90s, Independence Day is 100% pure popcorn movie and it doesn't pretend to be anything else. Filled with outrageous action and confrontational aliens, ID4 is given a flawless digital presentation and an option to watch either the theatrical cut or special edition with 9 additional minutes. Unfortunately, this 2-disc Five Star Collection set is now out of print in favor of single-disc widescreen and P&S versions, but it is worth tracking down.

88) The Silence of the Lambs: Special Edition

I still don't understand all the appeal behind the Hannibal Lecter films, but I'm lead to believe I'm in the minority. Before there were the sequel and prequel, and after there was the Michael Mann prequel, there was Silence of the Lambs, the king of 1991's cinema. While the long out-of-print Criterion DVD garnered some votes, it was MGM's Special Edition re-release that made the cut. The disc includes twenty minutes of deleted scenes, the documentary "Inside the Labyrinth", the original making-of featurette, an outtake reel and more. And the price is right, just look for the "Widescreen" label on top.

87) The Usual Suspects: Special Edition

Bryan Singer's stylish and effective suspense film The Usual Suspects has garnered a reputation for being one of last decade's finest cinematic works. MGM's double-sided Special Edition disc features remastered picture and sound, plus an assortment of audio commentaries, featurettes, deleted scenes, and outtakes.

86) Walt Disney Treasures: Silly Symphonies

Part of the first wave of Walt Disney Treasures released, the 2-disc Silly Symphonies tin contains forty-one cartoon shorts, spanning over ten years and most pre-dating Disney's entrance into feature films. This collection of shorts shows the progress made in the early age of animation. Highlights include "Skeleton Dance" (which marked the launch of the series) and "Flowers and Trees" (the first color short and first winner of the Animated Short Oscar). As only 150,000 tins were produced, this is becoming increasingly difficult (or expensive) to find.

85) Donnie Darko

One of 2001's surprise films, Donnie Darko has developed an audience while winning praise from critics, in spite of an almost non-existent theatrical run. A first time writer/director (Richard Kelly), a giant evil rabbit, and Patrick Swayze aren't a traditional formula for success, but Donnie Darko is one little original film very much worth checking out. Reduced to a bargain-bin price, Fox's DVD is a steal with two audio commentaries, 20 deleted scenes with optional commentary, a music video, and more.

84) The Thing: Collector's Edition

While The Thing, John Carpenter's suspenseful sci-fi/thriller takes a big dive from its high spot in last year's last, Universal's DVD remains a must-buy for genre fans. Released when Universal's Collector's Editions really packed a punch, The Thing features an 80-minute documentary, audio commentary with Carpenter and Kurt Russell, outtakes, production notes, and a photo gallery. Having undergone a price drop last year makes this one all the better to buy, in spite of the non-anamorphic transfer.

83) The Mummy: Ultimate Edition

Love them or hate them, Universal's Mummy film series has become one of several to catch on in the past few years. Yes, indirectly, it is this film the original The Mummy of the Brendan Fraser variety which is responsible for pitting professional wrestlers in lead roles for $90 million blockbusters. Anyway, this 1999 film is presented in a 2-disc re-release as part of Universal's failed Ultimate Edition line. Offering DD and DTS tracks and essentially the same extras from the initial DVD, this is the release of the film to get, even if it might not be worth upgrading to.

82) 24: Season One

One of the hottest TV shows of the 2001-02 season, "24" is a thriller with a twist--the show takes place in 'real time' so that one whole season comprises one day ("24" hours) in the life of federal agent Jack Bauer and his family. Fox, the premiere TV-on-DVD studio, wasted no time in getting their hit show onto disc, in time for the holiday season. The 6-disc set gives you the ability to watch the show in the essential chronological order, without interruption (well, besides having to change discs). No complaints are found in the Audio/Video department and voters agree this is groundbreaking Must-See TV in a great set from Fox.

81) Brotherhood of the Wolf: 3-Disc Collector's Edition

The French film we call Brotherhood of the Wolf received surprisingly great DVD treatment in Canada - a 3-disc Collector's Edition from TVA Films. The film itself is the Director's Cut, running seven minutes longer than Universal's USA DVD release. Most of the extras come from the France collector's set DVD, including two audio commentaries, which are in French and not subtitled, unfortunately. Disc Two includes the 80-minute documentary "The Guts of the Beast" and 40-minute deleted scenes featurette. Disc Three features another 80-minute documentary, plus storyboards and a still gallery. Don't let the low ranking fool you - this DVD set turned up in a surprising number of people's lists and many feel it is the ultimate DVD presentation a film can receive, eh.
