Personality: Kay doesn't like to be the trailblazer, the heroic leader type. She definitely prefers to be the support, in the thick only if absolutely necessary - she likes adventure so much as she learns from it and it is for a good cause. A little shy at first, she is more lonely than scared. However, once you have earned her trust and respect, she is a friend for life.
Any special skills?: Background in acrchaeology and some in folklore. Also, is a botanist/herbologist as a hobby, so familiar with herbs, plants, etc.
History: Many people long for adventure, but very few actually experience it. Makayla Jeanette Reed never imagined that she might be one of the 'adventurous' types. To date, the most excitement of her twenty five-year existence was the occasional dig she went on. Makayla loves archaeology and botany because of the beauty and mystery involved - how a small and seemingly insignificant object like a comb or common weed told so much about a culture. The excitement of discovery in the safety of academia. When she was younger she never desired to be one of the 'cool people', a star athlete, or an aspiring performer. Her games of pretend were meeting famous figures of the past, uncovering the secret to the dinosaurs' disappearance, lecturing on some lost alien species. As she grew older, she did make friends, though few and rare as her quiet, shy demeanor made socializing awkward at times. At her parents', Jack and Anne, request, at the age of eight, she joined a girls' softball team at the local rec center. She enjoyed playing outdoors, the camaraderie, the exercise, and did well; she joined a team in high school and even got a scholarship to a college a couple hours from home.
Softball also connected her to Beth Greene, who would become her closest, truest friend. Kay, as Beth called her (Mak sounded too much like a boy's name) and Beth got along perfect as they both loved the romance of imagination. Beth loved theater and storytelling, while Kay loved history and geography. Ever since childhood, exotic places and cultures had intrigued her, so it was no surprise to anyone when she graduated college with a major in Archaeology and a minor in Botany (as vegetation and flora typically add as much information as artifacts and bones). Botany pleased her parents far more than her alternate study of folklore, which her best friend, Beth Greene, pursued.
It was during college that a second life-changing event occurred; Makayla (or Mak as some call her) fell in love. During a dig before her senior year, Mak fell in love with a young assistant/guide named Nick, who was finishing his Master's degree and hoping to begin work on his doctorate and tenure. Their mutual passion and interest sparked a friendship, which fueled into love. At the age of 20 (due to AP classes and full class loads) she graduated and, with a promise of marriage once her school work was complete, she enrolled in grad school at Nick's college.
At first, things were great for the happy couple. But Nick was occupied with teaching and his research and Mak had also taken on a part time job at a local supermarket to earn extra money while working on her Masters; tension, not love, grew as she finally reached her academic completion. One night Mak had ended her shift early and decided to surprise Nick with dinner. When she reached his office, however, she was surprised to find him in flagrante dilecto with one of his students. At Nick's admission of a sustained relationship - not a passing fling - with the student, Makayla ran home and immediately began packing the belongings she could into her well-worn (and recently untrustworthy) Jeep Cherokee.
Stopping only for coffee and gas, despite the ominous noises and poundings coming from the vehicle, she sped down the coast, hoping to reach a destination where she could comfortably start over, and some R&R was just the prescription to get over the cold that was lingering. She figured San Francisco might be a good start, as it was rich in culture, and she could enroll in a doctoral program there. If nothing else it would be a springboard, a place to get her bearings and plan her next move. She knew her parents wouldn't be thrilled, but they wouldn't want to see her suffer.
No, to find new focus and begin again, she needed somewhere different. Having always followed, always safe, Makayla finally was having her own adventure.
Any Weapons: Did softball in high school and college, so has a pretty mean swing.
