Magic Systems for Mage: the Epic Fantasy
Most of the following system is gleaned or extrapolated from either M:tA or M:SC. I have added details I believe will
make it easier to adjudicate magic in my game. I have made several significant revisions to the Paradox/Scourge system
to make it fit the setting and give it teeth as a system intended to encourage several aspects of game balance. Most of
it has already been agreed upon by the majority of my players. Even so, until we have had an opportunity to use it more
extensively, I will consider it an EXPERIMENTAL system and am open to concerns, comments, and criticism regarding it.
Basics: Process of Making Magic
- What are you attempting to do?
- What Spheres are required?
- How does it fit into your character's paradigm?
- How long does it take?
- Is your Effect casual or vulgar?
- Do you need any mundane skills to help you?
- How many successes do you need or want to accumulate?
- Calculate the difficulty of your Arete check
- Apply modifiers (-3 to +3)
- Spend Willpower or Quintessence
- Roll Arete
- Did the Scourge die demand a Backlash?
- Calculate the number of successes you earned. Do you need to roll more successes to accomplish your task?
- Does your Effect require an Attribute + Ability check?
- Does someone parry, dodge, soak, resist or employ countermagick against your Effect?
- What does the resulting Effect do?
