Colorado Scenery San Juan Loop Page Three
This page is about Silverton. US Highway 550 goes through here. People can still travel the steam locomotive on the narrow gauge route from Durango to Silverton. Some of the 4 wheel drive passes in this area include: Engineer, Cinnamon, Ophir, and Imogene. These routes were made during the mining days and are very popular for 4 wheeling. Many have deserted mines from days gone past. If you like to shop there are many gift shops to browse in. This area is rich in history and beauty. We love looking around at the old Victorian houses.
Views heading into Silverton, Colorado.
Looking back at the highway from a pullout, this section of the road gave me the "heebie jeebies", notice the sheer cliff, lack of guard rails and how far down the river is from the road. We're almost to Silverton now.
This is taken from the same spot the previous photo is, only we're looking over Silverton.
This is the main street in Silverton.
This is a photo of the steam locomotive that travels between Silverton and Durango.
