Chapter Six

Joey was driving home from Ashley's house. It was very late and very dark out, especially because there was no moon that night. All he could think about was what had happened with Chris earlier that day. He knew Chris had a right to be pissed. Who wouldn't be? If Chris had done the same thing to him he would be livid, too.

"He didn't have to kick her out, though... Or me, for that matter," Joey said aloud.

"He did over react..."

As he was driving down the road he started to pay less and less attention to what was going on around him. The only thing that snapped him back to reality was the sight of two headlights swerving from side to side on the road ahead of him. Before he had time to react to what was happening the two cars collided with a gigantic crash.

Joey grabbed a hold of the door handle, his eyes wide with fear as the car struck his driver side front with such an impact that it sent the car rolling. A few seconds after they hit, Joey was knocked out.

Chris awoke with a start, his heart pounding so hard that he thought it might jump right out of his chest. Michelle rolled over, opening her eyes a little to see what was going on. She opened her eyes all the way when she saw Chris breathing hard.

"Chris? Chris are you okay?" She asked worriedly, sitting up.

Chris just shook his head as he sat up, swinging his legs over the side of the bed and running his hands over his face and through his hair.

"What happened? What's wrong?"

"I... I saw Joey, and..." Chris panted, struggling to calm down his breathing.

Michelle rubbed his back soothingly.

"There was an accident..."

"Chris... It was just a dream. I'm sure Joey's just fine. He's probably home sleeping right now."

"But... it was so real..."

"Here, why don't you call him? You might get him angry for calling so late, but if it'll ease your mind..."

"I think I will... just to be sure he's okay."

Chris waited as the phone rang, and rang, and rang. He looked up at Michelle with worried eyes as the answering machine finally picked up. Chris didn't bother leaving a message, he just hung up.

"No answer... I'll try his cell, that's always on," Chris said, dialing up Joey's cell number.

Again, there was nothing.

Michelle had to admit that she was starting to feel scared. Maybe Chris's dream was real. Maybe Joey really had been in an accident. She bit her bottom lip as she watched Chris stand up and pull on some clothes. He quickly got ready, then kissed Michelle on the cheek.

"I'll be back... I just have to know he's okay," He said, turning and heading out to his car. He jumped in drove over to Joey's house.

After banging on the door for about five minutes Chris started to panic. He was shaking so bad he thought he was going to drop, so he leaned against the door to steady himself.

"Maybe he's at Ashley's... I won't go in, but I'll drive by just to see if his car's there," Chris said to himself as he got back into his car and started it up, heading down a different road then he came, going for Ashley's place.

He was looking around the sides of the roads the whole time, just in case something really did happen, but it was so dark that it was hard for him to see. Since there was nobody on the road he slowed down to a crawl and continued looking.

After about ten minutes Chris was starting to believe that it was just a dream, and that he was stupid for coming out and driving around so late at night. But just as he was about to head home something caught his eye.

"Oh no..." he breathed softly, throwing his car into park and jumping out of it, heading over to the other side of the road.

He stepped carefully, seeing all of the broken glass on the road. When he lifted his head up he saw the familiar Acura SLC, but it looked like a crushed soup can laying on the side of the road. He ran over, calling out Joey's name, not getting a response from Joey, but a groan from the man in the other car.

Chris fumbled in his pocket and pulled out his cell phone, calling the police to report the accident and to get an ambulance. Then he hung up and called Michelle.

"Michelle... god, it wasn't a dream..." Chris said, tears starting to stream down his cheeks.

"Wake the guys up, tell them Joey's been in an accident..."

"Oh my god... Okay baby, hold on," Michelle said, setting the phone down and running to the guys' rooms, waking them all up and telling them as fast as she could.

Chris walked around the car, searching for a way to get to Joey. He couldn't see Joey, but he knew he was hurt.

Finally he saw a small area where he could squeeze in with out getting stuck. He crawled in and his heart beat faster when he saw Joey. His head hanging to the side, his hair and face were streaked with blood. Chris couldn't see the rest of him, because of the car, so he knew the rest must be worse. He reached out and gently checked for a pulse, finding one, but it was very weak.

"Joey... Joey come on, wake up buddy..." he said, trying to get Joey to respond.

"I didn't mean what I said earlier... I was just angry... Please, you have to wake up..."

"Chris?" Michelle said, she was still on the phone.

"Michelle... He's alive, but he won't wake up," Chris said, the fact that he was crying now evident in his voice.

"He'll be okay Chris..." she said, trying to calm Chris down.

"This is all my fault... If I hadn't blown up at him he'd be fine..."

Before Michelle could say anything, Chris heard the ambulance and police pull up. They came running over, and told Chris that he needed to move. Chris looked at Joey one more time and bit his lip, then moved out of the way and watched as they all got to work.
