chapter 6:
[Minutes later...
Tea is pacing in the room she earlier used to change into her wedding gown. Her brother is quietly watching her, frustrated that he can't solve her problems for her like he did when she was a little girl.]
Tea: Why is my life like this? What did I do to deserve this? Tell me. I must have done something. No one could have this much bad luck without there being some cosmic cause.
Del: You're not the one to blame. This is all Manning's fault.
Tea: Edgar is everything I have ever wanted in a man. He's smart. He's successful. He's thoughtful. He's attentive. He's drop-dead gorgeous. But, I take one look at my crazy ex-husband and suddenly none of that's enough anymore. What is wrong with me?
Del: Do you want me to let Manning in here?
Tea: No! Absolutely not. I won't let him win this time.
Del: This isn't a contest.
Tea: With Todd, everything is a contest, a game, a competition. This time, I intend to win.
Del: I want you to be happy. If Manning...
Tea: Todd never allows happiness near him. Anyone who is foolish enough to be with him is destined for loneliness and misery.
Del: Do you want Edgar in here?
Tea: I want the last hour of my life back. I want the last seven years of my life back. I want to go back to a time when Todd Manning didn't exist in my life.
Del: Do you really?
Tea: You doubt my sincerity?
Del: I think you sincerely wish you didn't love Manning. That doesn't change how you feel.
Tea: I would have to be a masochist to love Todd.
Del: When you get down to it, aren't all people in love masochists?
Tea: I never was...before Todd.
Del: You were never in love before Manning charmed his way into your life.
Tea: Some charm!
Del: I agree, he needs help in that department. Actually, he needs help in every department. He's the ultimate bad boy. He challenges you more than anyone ever has. You hate that about him, and you love that about him.
Tea: So what if I'm tempted by him again? That doesn't mean that I have to throw my life away, just because my heart won't let go of him, like it should.
Del: Do you really want to marry Edgar when you're still in love with another man?
Tea: Are you trying to talk me out of getting married today?
Del: I don't need to. You've already decided.
Tea: Edgar is a good man. He deserves better than the baggage of my past.
Del: Manning made it clear today that, whenever he wants to, he'll clutter up your present, and your future.
Tea: Every time I think I may have even a slight chance at happiness he'll show up and prove me wrong.
Del: You don't have to allow it anymore.
Tea: Do I have a choice?
Del: I could kill him. You carry everything else in that great, big purse of yours, do you have a wooden stake, some garlic...?
Tea: Todd is mortal.
Del: There are some who question that.
Tea: I don't. I've seen it for myself.
Del: Ever since you were a little girl, you have always wanted to be the one who made all the decisions for yourself. Now you have the ultimate decision to make. Do you marry Edgar and settle down? Or, do you choose Manning and never feel settled again?
