FALLING AGAIN
chapter 5:
[Tea looks away from her groom and down at her ex-husband, on his knees in front of her, stunned yet again by his unpredictability.]
Tea: You're crazy.
Todd: I'm serious. Marry me.
Tea: I'm in the middle of my wedding. You can't propose to a woman in the middle of her wedding.
Todd: Why not?
Tea: Because...you just can't.
Todd: That book you gave me, that one with all that etiquette junk in it, never said this wasn't okay. So, it must be okay, right? Marry me.
Tea: Stop saying that.
Todd: Not until you give me another chance.
Tea: I gave you chance, after chance, after chance. You chose someone else. Accept that I've done the same.
Todd: You could never love a guy named Edgar.
Tea: I do.
Todd: You said those exact words to me, remember? You said them twice. You made promises to me. Tea Delgado doesn't break her promises.
Tea: Todd Manning does. I'm not the only woman that you've vowed to spend the rest of your life with, or have you forgotten?
Todd: I wish I could forget every miserable second I wasted, especially all the time I wasted without you. Stop being stubborn and give me another chance.
Tea: You had so many chances. You made your choice. You made sure that I knew with painful clarity what your choice was.
Todd: You know why I did what I did. Just say you'll let me off the hook. My knees are starting to go numb.
Tea: Your heart went numb a long time ago. I can't be with someone who isn't capable of loving me.
[Todd suddenly stands up and pulls gently on Tea's arm.]
Todd: Come with me.
[Tea jerks her arm out of his grasp.]
Tea: I've made myself clear. I'm never going anywhere with you again.
Todd: I'm not spilling my guts in front of all these nosy losers anymore. Just let me say what I have to say, in private. If you still want to marry this guy, after I've had my say, maybe I'll let you.
Tea: I won't allow you to hold my life hostage anymore.
Todd: I won't force you to do anything. If you want me to get lost, after you've heard what I have to say, I'll leave.
[Tea looks toward Edgar, uncertain what to do.]
Edgar: Talk to him and then we'll talk.
Tea: I want to marry you.
Edgar: Obviously he won't allow that to happen until you hear what he has to say first.
Tea: Are you sure?
Edgar: I want you to be happy. That's the only thing I'm certain of right now.
[Tea turns back in the direction she had moments earlier entered the church. She feels more embarrassed than she ever has in her life as she surveys all the disapproving glances on the faces of their guests.
Tea looks back at Edgar and then Todd before turning to her brother.]
Tea: Come with us.
Todd: We don't need him.
Tea: Either he comes with us, or I won't go with you.
Todd: He'll stay outside the room, right?
Tea: I won't go with you. You understand that, don't you?
Todd: We'll see about that.
Tea: I'm only agreeing to listen to you so you'll allow our wedding to continue without anymore interruptions.
Todd: Whatever you say.
Tea: Do you really think you can convince me to change my mind about getting married in the middle of my wedding? Even you can't believe that you could really have that much hold over me.
Todd: You'll come with me because you want to, not because I'm holding anything over you.
Tea: Not this time, Todd. This time we play by my rules. Rule number one is that if you're not invited to my wedding, you're not allowed to attend. Antonio, would you please escort Mr. Manning from the premises.
Antonio: This is going to be my pleasure. Let's go, Manning.
Todd: Being a crooked cop in Llanview doesn't give you any jurisdiction here.
Antonio: I don't need jurisdiction to toss your boney butt onto the sidewalk.
[Antonio tries to grab Todd's arm again. Todd angrily prevents it.]
Todd: Get your hands off me and stop checking out my butt.
[Cristian joins his brother in trying to persuade Todd to follow Tea's wishes and leave her wedding.]
Cristian: Come on, man, think about what you're doing. What would Jessica think if she knew how you were acting?
Todd: My niece would be cheering me on, just like all of you should be. If you gave a damn about Tea you wouldn't want her to settle for some egghead named Edgar.
Antonio: She should settle for a criminal like you, instead?
Todd: I make her happy.
Tea: When? When have you ever allowed me any happiness?
Todd: That time I humiliated myself for you.
Tea: Which time?
Todd: See? I've made you happy so many times you can't even remember them all.
Tea: Your humiliation doesn't make me happy. I'm certainly not happy right now.
Todd: If you're not happy, don't marry this guy.
Tea: You're impossible.
Todd: I love you, Tea. Tell me that you still love me and we'll go somewhere and we'll do that talking thing that you were always trying to force on me. It will be different this time. This time I'll really try not to screw everything up for us. I need you. Come with me.
