CHAPTER 14 |
chapter 14
RJ'S CLUB, LLANVIEW:
Blair walked in slowly, skulking around making sure that no one she knew was here. It was late afternoon and the club was empty except for a bartender she didn't recognize and RJ wearing an apricot colored shirt, sitting in a corner booth going over some books.
She walked over quietly and slipped in across from him, not waiting to be invited. RJ was surprised, they had never been very close and her association with Todd Manning made her somewhat of an enemy so he was surprised by her presence, but also, strangely intrigued. She looked a bit worn out - dark circles under her eyes and sallow skin - not the glowing radiance one often expects in pregnant women. She wore a yellow maternity blouse and her stomach was small, but already visible.
"Well, well, Blair. What's a pregnant woman doing in a gin joint in the middle of the afternoon when she should be home baking cookies for her little family?" He took a sip of his drink as he observed her closely as she continued looking around nervously. Her bleached,spiky-haired head twitching.
"Hello, RJ. I was in the neighborhood. Wondered what you were up to," she said, smiling at him.
"Since when are you ever in my neighborhood? Why don't you go back to your mansion and that lying bastard that you live with and get the hell out of my club. I don't serve Todd Manning's incubator."
Blair looked injured by his insult, and she put her hand to her stomach and felt the cold, dead pillow in there.
"That's cruel, RJ, even for you!"
This was not a woman one could have sympathy for, but something in her eyes made him feel a touch of compassion for her. She looked like he had struck her physically.
"What do you want, Blair?"
Blair wasn't sure if she could trust him, but she was desperate for help and he was probably the only one on this town that could help her. Everybody knew RH Gannon was "Connected". He could get things done...for a price. There was always a price.
"So, RJ, I heard Tea Delgado was in town, did you happen to run into her?"
A look of dark hatred veiled his heavy-lidded eyes as he looked away from her and reached for his drink.
"Yeah, I ran into her at The Palace. So?"
"What was she doing here," asked Blair non-chalantly.
RJ smiled. She was casting out her evil net and fishing for information, hoping for a big fish.
"Well, why don't you ask your man, Todd, since he splashed her all over his front page. Or did you miss that colorful edition of The Sun. It was quite the talk of the town..."
Blair sneered and squirmed in her seat.
"So. I'm guessing your little reunion didn't go well?"
"She treated me like garbage, is that what you want to hear," he said downing his drink. "I don't think she came here to see me. Maybe...she had other reasons..."
Blair looked anxious at his insinuation.
"Why? What did she tell you? Was she here to see Todd?"
RJ threw his head back, his braids shaking with laughter at her paranoia and jealousy, so easy to read she was hardly a challenge for him.
"So, that's what you want to know. What's wrong Blair, the bun in your oven not doing the trick?" You think maybe they were planning another great getaway together..." he teased her, mercilessly.
Blair slammed her hand on the table causing RJ's glass to jump.
"She's never going to get Todd away from me! Never! He loves ME, not her," she screeched.
RJ leaned across the table and whispered.
"Oh, yeah? Then what the hell are you doing here?"
Blair leaned her head back against the booth, looking into his cold eyes. RJ hated Todd, but he hated Tea more for what for humiliating him. This was his weakness - and she intended to use it to her advantage.
"I think they spent the night together," Blair said emphatically.
RJ sat back silently, his lips quivering as an ugly sneer crossed his face. Tea and he were over, but the thought of her laying down with that man made the bile rise up in his throat, leaving a powerful bitterness in his mouth. An image of the two of them, writhing and naked, passed briefly through his mind, revolting and enraging him.
"Gee, Blair, I thought he loved YOU!"
"He does! He's just a little angry with me right now, that's all. I need more time to fix things."
RJ looked into her desperate eyes.
"Look, Blair. Even I've come to accept that there are some things you can't "fix." Even yesterday when I spoke to her, I saw the look in her eyes at the mention of his name, and I see how Todd reacts every time I mention hers. Those two are out of control for each other. Hey, I think its pretty sick, but even I can see it. And I don't think you can "fix" their heads, Blair. If I were you, I'd forget about the love part, and use the only weapon you have!"
RJ looked down toward her belly and nodded.
"Hey, as long as you're having his kid, what do you care? You're all set. He's trapped. So what are you worried about?"
Blair looked straight into his eyes as RJ read the fear in them.
"What? You're having his kid, right? You're holding the ace, Blair, so what's your problem?"
Blair looked across the table at RJ's empty glass - a clear, cold emptiness that felt like her own body.
"I lost it," she said almost in a whisper,"I lost the baby."
RJ sat still - stunned by her revelation. He got up and took his empty glass over to the bar, filled it with bourbon and then filled a second glass. Walking back to the booth, he sat down and handed her the second glass. She hesitated for a moment, then gulped it down with one swallow.
It felt good going down, harsh and burning, jolting her into reality. Tears streamed down her face as she looked back at RJ.
"I'm sorry, Blair. I am. But why are you telling me this?"
"Because I need your help. You see, no one else knows. Everyone still thinks I'm still pregnant."
RJ stared at her in disbelief. Then he smiled. Finally he started laughing rather loudly. The bartender looked in their direction before gong back to cleaning.
"I'm glad you find my tragedy so amusing, RJ," said Blair wiping her face.
RJ finally stopped laughing.
And how the fuck am I supposed to help you? And, why should I?"
"Because if you don't, Todd is going to leave me for that Latino slut and they will be parading around Llanview rubbing our noses in it - yours and mine. Is that what you want?"
The thought of Todd Manning happy with Tea made his stomach lurch with nausea and hatred. The last thing he wanted was to watch them riding off into the sunset in his backyard.
"The thought of it makes me want to vomit, but I don't see how I can help you Blair?"
Blair leaned across the table, her voice low and definitive.
"You can get me a baby."
RJ looked shocked for a moment, then he began laughing again even more loudly, but when he looked back at her, her cold, green eyes were like ice - she was dead serious.
"You are kidding!"
"No, I'm not. I can only fake this pregnancy for so long, and in about 4 months I'm going to need a baby - a white, fair-haired baby. And I think you can get that for me RJ, cause you're the candyman. You can get anything for a price, and Todd Manning has more money than God!"
RJ was quiet, observing her closely.
"And what exactly is in all this for me? Some empty satisfaction of Todd not getting Tea? I've already lost her so that's not much of an incentive."
"Money, RJ! Todd's money! Just name your price and I'll get it for you."
RJ's eyes twinkled with the notion of Todd's money in his coffers...and...he wouldn't get Tea either.
"And how are you going to get your hands on Todd's money? You're not even marrid to the man."
"I'm working on that. It shouldn't be more than a couple of weeks before Todd marries me - for the sake of his baby, of course," she smiled with cunning satisfaction.
"You really are a bloodless creature, aren't you?"
Blair looked offended.
"I'm doing what I have to do to keep my family together. I'm not just doing this for me."
"Yeah, sure Blair. Whatever you say."
Blair sat back.
"So. Are you going to help me?"
RJ sat back, his eyes looking up at the ceiling in intense concentration, when suddenly a smile slithered slowly across his face.
"Okay, Blair. I will help you, but there are a few...conditions."
Fear spread across Blair's smug face.
"What conditions?"
"The first is I want one million dollars. Babies are expensive, specially fair-haired, white ones."
"Okay. Once I'm Mrs. Todd Manning I should have no problem with that."
"And the other is...," he saied leaning across the table and taking her hand, " I want to fuck you on your wedding night."
Shock suffused Blair's features as she stared silently at RJ. Pulling her hand away quickly she stood up to leave.
"Over my dead body," she said walking away.
"Blair, wait!"
Blair stopped, and reluctantly walked back.
"You know Blair, you're not very bright. See, you already told me that you're not pregnant, so if you don't meet my demands, I might have to go and inform poor Todd about your little scam."
Blair threw him a hateful sneer and sat down again.
RJ extended his hand to her to seal the deal.
"So, Blair, do we have a deal?"
She stared down at his hand but did not take it.
"Why on earth would you want to sleep with me. I know I'm not your type."
"Cause I want to have everything he has. I want to know that I've screwed with his lover, his money and his wife. That will be my revenge on Todd Manning."
"But, RJ, he can never know."
"I understand that. This is just for me. I'll know. I want to fuck Todd Manning over in every way. And Blair, this is the deal-breaker. You give me what I want, and I'll get you that baby."
Again he held his hand out to her. As she stared at his beckoning hand she knew she was making a deal with the devil, but finally she reached across the table and shook it firmly - one devil to another. At last she slithered out of the booth and got up quickly to leave.
"I'll be in touch, RJ."
RJ Gannon sat back and took a long, slow drink from his bourbon, and smiled broadly.
