Project Summaries |
Remote
coastal communities depend on exploiting nearshore marine resources
for livelihood.
In some areas detrimental resource use practices are being
applied (e.g. overfishing, fish bombing, cyanide poisoning).
Impacts include destruction of coral reefs, overcatch,
spoilage/wastage through improper processing of fish products.
NGO, Lembaga Pengkajian dan Pembinaan Social Ekonomi (LEPPSEK)
will demonstrate the application of simple fish processing techniques
appropriate for remote coastal communities to reduce overexploitive
and damaging practices to marine resources.
The is will involve introducing vertically integrated
approaches to fish resource use involving stock management, capture
techniques, processing and product marketing in sustainable fashion.
The venue will be the coastal community areas on Maginti and
Santiri islands. Community organizational groups will be established
in two catching areas.
Three types of processed fish products will be demonstrated in
salted, smoked and cooked formats followed by marketing processes.
The information and techniques demonstrated are expected to
represent viable and sustainable livelihood alternatives through
adoption of improved methods of catching, processing and managing
their fisheries resources.
LEPPSEK has finalised their proposal for consideration by the
demonstration project selection committee.

Tanjungkarang-Donggala
is an area just west of Palu, Central Sulawesi, on a peninsula
providing access to white sand beaches, coral reefs, fishing and a
relatively sheltered ocean supporting a range of water activities.
The area is becoming a popular destination for both local and
foreign tourists.
With this popularity, there is also the risk of poorly planned
development resulting in negative impacts on the environment. A NGO,
PokDarWis, proposes to demonstrate the application of four initiatives
for promotion of ecotourism on a sustainable basis.
These include simple techniques to manage human waste and
garbage in the area combined with stimulating alternative livelihoods
of resident through the sale of local handicrafts and provision of
food for sale to tourists.
Special attention will be paid to siting of cabins and toilets,
and refuse control on nearby boats and on the beaches.
Local residents will also be trained in the manufacture and
sale of three local handicraft types and in food preparation for
tourists.
The project will be socialised among the community and resort
operators.
Community groups will be selected and trained as the core to
demonstrate these practices for more sustainable ecotourism
development in the area, and in other communities nearby.
PokDarWis has finalised their proposal for consideration by the
demonstration project selection committee.
