Landover was your normal run of the mill magic kingdom, with fairy folk, and wizardry, just like the advertisement had promised. But once Ben Holiday purchased it for a whopping $1,000,000, he found out a couple of details that the ad had failed to mention.
The kingdom was in ruins. The peasants were without any hope, and the Barons refused to recognize a king. A dragon was laying waste on the countryside, while an evil witch plotted to destroy everything in sight.
Ben's only followers were the Court Magician; Abernathy, a talking dog who served as the Court Scribe, and the lovely Willow. The Paladin, the legendary champion of the Kings of Landover, seemed to be a myth and an empty suit of armor.
And to make matters even more stressful, Ben soon learned that the Iron Mark, lord of the demons, had challenged all the Kings before Ben to a duel to the death - a duel which no human could ever hope to win.
A year had passed since Ben Holiday purchased the Magic Kingdom from the wizard Meeks. Ben had survived with the aid of his three loyal friend: Questor Thews, an ill-trained wizard; Abernathy, a talking dog; and the lovely Willow, who sometimes had to become a tree.
However Ben had been troubled by dreams of disaster of his former partner, Miles Bennett. Yet when he returned to Earth, Ben found Miles doing splendidly. Unknown to Ben, the dreams had been a trap set by Meeks, who returned to the Magic Kingdom as a tiny insect hidden in Ben's clothing. That first night back in Landover, Ben awoke to see Meeks gloating over him, claiming to have the medallion that could summon the mysterious Paladin, and that he had cast a spell to switch appearances with Ben.
Ben found himself an outcast, no longer recognized by any of his friends, though all his powerful enemies seemed to know who he was. Without his medallion he couldn't seek out the help of the Paladin against Meeks. There was only one hope: The prism cat - whatever that might be!
It all began when Questor Thews announced that he finally could restore Abernathy to his human form. It was Questor in the first place whom turned Abernathy into a Wheaton Terrier- only with hands and able to talk.
Everything went well, until the clumsy wizard inhaled the magic dust from the spell and sneezed. Suddenly where Abernathy had stood there was now a bottle containing a particularly evil imp. It had been in Michel Ard Rhi's collection of artifacts. He was the former king of Landover, now exiled to Earth. Abernathy had now become a part of that collection!
Ben Holiday set forth to Earth, taking his green but also beautiful love, Willow, with him. Unfortunately, they had stayed too long on Earth, and without the soil from Landover in which to root as a tree sometimes, Willow would not survive.
Which left it up to Questor Thews to save them. He set out to seek help, and to make things worse the imp had escaped and sought the help of the evil witch Nightshade, returned from her exile in Faerie.
Everything should have been quiet and pleasant for Ben Holiday, former Chicago lawyer become sovereign of the Magic Kingdom of Landover. But it wasn't.
Horris Kew, conjured, confidence man, and trickster, had returned to Landover from Ben's own world. Alas, Horris had not returned of his own volition he had been sent by the Gorse, a sorcerer of great evil, whom Horris had unwittingly freed from the magic Tangle Box, where it had long ago been imprisoned by the fairy folk. Now it had returned to enslave those who had once dared condemn it. But first, it could stand rid Landover of all who could stand in its way...
Soon Ben found himself imprisoned within the gloom of the Tangle Box, lost in its mists and its labyrinthian ways. The only one who could free Ben from the Tangle Box was the lady Willow. But she had disappeared, was gone from Landover on a mysterious mission of her own...
Ben Holiday was finally proud and happy. And why shouldn't he be? The Magic Kingdom of Landover which he ruled as High Lord, was finally at peace, and he and his wife, the sylph Willow, could watch their daughter Mistaya grow.
And grow she did - shooting through her infancy in months, learning to walk and swim in the same week. Mistaya had been born a seedling, nourished by soils from Landover, Earth, and the mysterious fairy mists. However, she was born in the evil Nightshade's territory, the Deep Fell. With dazzling green eyes that cut straight to your soul, she was as lovely as her mother, and Ben wanted nothing more than his family and his peaceful kingdom. But his happiness was interrupted by Rydall, a king of lands beyond the fairy mists, whom assembled armies on Landover's border and threatened to invade unless Ben was able to defeat Rydall's seven champions.
Some told the High Lord to refuse Rydall's challenge, but Holiday could not, for Mistaya had been kidnapped from her guardians by foul magic. And Rydall held the key to her fate...
