TTC Route Numbers

Between 1988 and 1991 the Toronto Transit Commission introduced many new bus routes, with numbers as high as 191. In 1993 Jeffrey Kay compiled a brief list of the higher route numbers, from 100 to 191. It was about this time that John Knight brought a list of most TTC routes to a Toronto Transportation Society meeting. The two began working together filling in the numerous gaps. Their research revealed many route names that should be numbered, but these numbers could not be found in the documents in their collections. Several months later their research was aided by a TTC Operator's Manual from the collection of TTS member and TTC operator George Schpuniar, dated January 1, 1958. It detailed all TTC routes operating at that time, along with their number. Additional assistance was provided by Bill Hood, a former TTC operator who has studied various aspects of the history of public transit in Toronto, and by retired TTC Equipment Department employee Ray Corley.

Here is the result of their research, showing all the TTC routes that were operated since the numbering system was introduced in 1956 (following approval at a Commission meeting in February of that year). While we are confident that all regular TTC routes that were assigned a route number are included on the list, some dates may not be exact. Some special service routes (such as the CNE Express buses) were assigned numbers in the 700 series. If you have any corrections or additions, please forward that information to the Society and identify your source.

A series of pictures were taken of bus 1561 at Hillcrest on March 18, 1955, that show an experimental numbered destination linen. TTC photo number 19484 shows a side reading of

43A

N O R T H   Y O N G E

It can be presumed that the other readings also did not correspond to the final route numberings that were adopted the following year. (Number 43 was assigned to KENNEDY, while NORTH YONGE became route 59.) The tri-colour linnen signs were used from 1956 until 1985 when they began to be replaced with white on black (later yellow on black) mylar signs which could be produced in one third of the time.
