Chapter Two

So I took the bed. I took off my clothes and put on my pj’s and got under the covers. It was a featherbed so it was really comfy. Immediately, I felt a pang of guilt. Right this second Nick is out there, trying to get some sleep on that lumpy couch while I’m on this wonderful bed. I pushed that thought out my mind and went to sleep.

That night was really restless for me. I kept having nightmares with my ex-boyfriend, Peter. They’re a little foggy now, though. There was one, which I can’t remember now but it was bad enough that I woke up screaming.

. . . . . .

So Emily went to the bedroom, leaving me to the couch. I was hoping she’d let me share. Nothing sexual would happen, just me on top of the covers and her under them. Oh well. This couch isn’t so bad, a little lumpy but okay. I sort of felt sorry for her. First having a bad relationship, then the ski lodge losing her reservations and now an avalanche. What a rough time. I took off my clothes and put on a pair of sweat pants and lay down. The last thought I had before drifting was “What kind of perfume was she wearing?” Then I fell asleep.

I was sleeping pretty soundly until I heard screaming. At first I thought it was in my head but when I woke up the screaming was still there. My first thought was “Emily!” I ran to her room to see what was wrong.

. . . . . .

Nick ran into my room and was shaking me awake. I was very disoriented and it took me a while to realize where I was.

“Emily, are you okay?”, he asked with concern.

“Yeah, I think so. What happened?”

“You had a nightmare. You were screaming.”

“Oh my God!”

“What were you dreaming about?”

“That’s weird, I can’t remember.”

“It must have been bad.”

“I don’t know. I guess.”

“I’m going to make some tea.”

“No!”

“What? Why not?”

“I don’t want to be alone.”

“Okay. I’ll stay with you.”

So that’s what I did. I got under the blankets and got close to her. There’s that perfume again. It was light and sweet. I began to inhale the smell like a wonderful drug until my eyes got too heavy and I drifted off to sleep.
