Factors Causing the Destruction of the River

In these article the researchers enumerated the major factors contributing the destruction of the river.

Human Factor

As the researchers visited Barangay 17 and Barangay 13, they were able to breathe the same air that the people breathe living in that area, they were able to see the unseen part of Cagayan de Oro City. While doing the research and as they talk to the inhabitants of that location, and question bothered their minds, touched their hearts and moved their spirits, "Does the government does not really see the real problem, or are they just afraid to open their eyes to see the reality and hear the plight of the less fortunate individual?" The researchers saw an image, which speaks of an abused river. As what they observed, proper sanitation was not practiced and observed. They don't even bother to mind the consequences of their doing. Definitely, actions showed it. Human wastes were thrown to the river, plastics, cans, empty bottles and harmful elements. Name it they have it. It has been a little grocery store of junk garbages that are commonly found beside and in the river. They don't know that these materials cause water on the river to flow slowly and finally become stagnant. It has been proven with the interview done with a person named Angelito living at Isla de Oro. According to him, every time it rains so hard, the water on the river rises, reaching their houses bringing with it a number of wastes and garbages once throwed there.

"When the river cries."

"A slowly dying river. Who is asking for help?"

Population Explosion

Everytime the population grows, there's a need for more houses that people may live in. And because of the economic problems housing projects cost high that people finds it difficult to avail a noble house. They are left with no choice but to squat. One common site of squatting is in the nearby river. The river is then in danger. Here, people doesn't have proper waste disposal that made the river dirty and hazardous. This becomes a great problem because it affects the health of the people especially the children living in the area due to improper sanitation.

"An interview done with the resident of Brgy. 13 after having their reactions we proved that we really need to solve the problem of Cagayan de Oro River."

Lack of Funds, Campaigns and Programs

Any project proposed cannot be realized without the proper funding. Many projects were proposed but total actions cannot be done due to the lack of funds from the concerned sectors and agencies. According to Atty. Babaylan of the SRLSIF they cannot do appropriate actions due to lack of funds. According to Mrs. Edna Leveros, 29 years old, a resident of Isla Delta, there was no proper implementation of proper waste disposal. According to her, their captain, Brgy. Capt. Alberto Laudi has not paid much attention to that problem. They were also not properly oriented about the proper waste management.
