Networking
Purpose: Co-opetition
The object of this network is to provide writers, copy editors, and proofreaders with some links to each other and to provide online writing, proofreading, and copyediting resources.Membership Criteria:
I will not endorse or guarantee the work of anyone listed in our network of proofreaders and copy editors, though I reserve the right to deny listing to someone if examples of their "work" seem (in my sole opinion) to display a lack of the dedication and professionalism I am trying to provide for my clients.
I also reserve the right to deny listing to anyone who (again in my sole opinion) appears to lack the spirit of co-opetition that I am trying to engender herein. It is my belief that clients' needs are best served by ensuring that their work is done by the best person for the job. The concept of co-opetition (co-operative competition) is otherwise known as playing to your strengths. We all have different strengths and weaknesses, specialties and interests. Matching up clients' needs with writers', editors', or proofreaders' strengths, specialties, and interests should provide the best possible service to the client. If anyone in our database were to receive an offer of work that would be better served by strengths they do not possess, it is expected that the "job" would be referred to someone on this list who possesses the needed strengths/experience.
Since I am semi-retired and therefore not in need of a vast income with which to build my future financial empire, I'm happy to give clients the option of being referred to more qualified network members. As a matter of fact, I'll refer them to someone who's not in the database at all if I realize we on the list are not qualified to handle the job and I know someone else who is.
To become a member of the network, you must be an experienced proofreader. You must actively promote your "business," either online or offline or both, and you must have a clientele or at least three, recent former clients who will give you a reference in the field in which you wish to work.Would You Like to Join the Network?
If you are a proofreader/copyeditor wannabe, check back later for a new page now under construction that is designed to assist those trying to become proofreaders/copyeditors. Feel free to send me a message stating your status and requesting information once it becomes available. I'll file your information away and contact you as soon as I have anything to offer.
If you're interested in networking (under the above conditions) with other proofreaders, copy editors, and writers, follow the e-mail instructions below carefully, attaching your resume' or CV, preferrably in Rich Text Format. Let me know who you are, where you live, and what your goals are. In return, you will receive a Network Referral Information form and a proofreading test to fill out and return as e-mail attachments. (At the present time, the network is not accepting applications; however, you may send your request and I'll keep it on file to contact you when we are seeking more networkers.)The information requested in the Network Referral Information form is all about experience and interest, rather than work history and education. It is more subjective than a resume or CV and will give you the opportunity to provide a little more personal/work detail with a little more personal style. This form will also organize your information for me so that I can quickly add it to my "Network Guide," which is a report that I will maintain covering all networkers enabling me to communicate with each networker and to determine who is best suited when authors request specific qualifications instead of specific freelancers.
I'll also list you on the Network Directory page by profession (writer, copy editor, or proofreader). You can write your bio yourself. I will protect your information using the same standards of confidentiality I was trained to use during my career as a medical transcriptionist. The only request I make of you is a link to "Other Freelance Writing Professionals" (http://www.proofreaders.net) on your web site, or if you don't have a web page, in your e-mail signature file. Here's the html code you need for your web page: Other Freelance Writing ProfessionalsFor most e-mail messages: Other Freelance Writing Professionals: http://www.proofreaders.net should work. In most cases, the e-mail software itself can make this a live link.
Also for the sake of your privacy, I will not list e-mail addresses. We wouldn't want spam robots (not to mention someone of whom you're not too fond) to pick up your address here and make your life miserable. I will, however, keep all networking information on file, and forward to each networker any messages received for him or her. The networker must then respond to the inquiry, directly to the potential client, including a cc: to the network administrator (persona@proofreaders.net substituting administrator for persona). Failure to respond to an inquiry will result in exclusion from the network. Even if you just send an "I've received your inquiry and will respond tomorrow" message, it's more professional than just ignoring an inquiry. You should have "canned messages" prepared to cut and paste into a reply to any inquiry.
If you think I might be of any other assistance to you, don't hesitate to send an e-mail to me. See instructions below.

Confidentiality
All communications of any type with A Last Look are private and confidential, and may not be stored by any means or shared in any manner with anyone else without the written permission of Lynda Karr. Communications from you are accorded the same rights. Your e-mail address is never shared with anyone else without your express permission except as demanded by the law. If you receive a communication from me by mistake, you may not use anything in it for your personal gain or for the personal gain or detriment of others, and you should notify me at once, delete the communication, and ignore its contents.Message Instructions: I'm eager to hear from you, but thanks to UCE/SPAM and address-harvesting robots, I had to devise a method of masking my e-mail addresses and/or weeding out serious inquiries from junkmail. My method is to (1) provide a new e-mail address whenever spam overtakes me and (2) provide subject lines for you to use that robots can't use.
(1) If you don't need me now but think you might in the future, bookmark this page and come back here to click on the current e-mail address when you need me. Once you become a client/networker, you'll be given my permanent address.
(2) To enable my e-mail program to filter your message properly, please type or copy-and-paste one of the following subject lines into the subject line of your message. I look at messages with these subject lines first and the rest of my messages when I get around to it. Once I become familiar with your address, you won't need to worry about this step.
I may need a proofreader and/or copyeditor.
I am a proofreader and/or copyeditor.
I'd like to be a proofreader and/or copyeditor.
I have a comment about A Last Look and/or your Web site. Then click on the "Send e-mail" link.
Once you've clicked on the link, your e-mail program will pop up. Right-click in the Subject line, and click paste to enter the subject line you chose from those above (or just type it in). Then, compose your message including how I should address you in my response, at least your general location (city, time zone), a phone number at which you can be reached in case e-mail ceases to work, and a short outline of what you are hoping to accomplish. If you are requesting a free estimate, please attach your project file(s) or a file containing a few pages from the middle of your project.
Send e-mail
To send a personal message, write a subject line that includes the name I would know you by, like "Do you remember Lynda Sandford, from Maple Shade, NJ?", and click on the following link: Hi, LyndaHaving trouble? If mailer daemon returns your message or if the links above don't appear to work for you, send your message directly to me at dzntwrk (means the link or your e-mail "doesn't work") @alastlook.com, but please don't forget the subject-line instructions above.
If you are a potential client and do not receive a reply from me within one business day, it may be because your e-mail host treats mail from Yahoo.com as spam. Check with your provider to see if placing my yahoo address in your filters or address book will negate that block. If so, send me a message telling me that, and I'll send you the yahoo address to put in your filters or address book (via my ISP e-mail, currently handtechisp.com). If putting my yahoo address in your program won't work, please resend your request, and tell me your e-mail host won't accept yahoo mail. Hopefully your e-mail host will accept mail from my ISP. I move around a bit and my ISP can change, so I prefer to use stable, continuous, able-to-be-reached-from-any-computer Yahoo.
If you are a potential networker or newbie/wannabe, you won't hear from me until network activity increases and I am once again accepting applicants or I have new pages on the site that may be of interest to you. I will keep your information on file for that purpose and that purpose alone.
