Chapter 5
She glared at them, so outraged that she was unable to speak for a moment.
"It's not what you think!" Kat blurted out.
"Yeah, we can explain!" Rachel added.
Litt shook her head with amazement. "I can't believe you two! And I thought
you were the sweetest people! Do you do this to all new roommates? I haven't
been here for a DAY, and you're going through my stuff."
"Litt -"
"No. Just get out." She pointed to the door and kept her eyes on them as
they slowly maneuvered their way past her. "How can I be your roommate if I
can't trust you? Am I going to have to lock my door? Or are you going to
pick that too?"
Kat hung her head in shame, but Rachel just shrugged and went to her own
room. Kat followed suit and Litt was left alone once more.
She sighed and rubbed her tired eyes. "God, why must I be the one who has to
go through all this crap? When will it stop?"
She looked around her new room sadly and her eyes rested on her open
notebooks. "I try so hard to keep that part of my life in the past - where
it belongs - and it keeps coming back to slap me in the face," she grumbled
to herself as she picked them up and stared down at them in her hands for a
moment. Tears welled up in her eyes and her chin began to quiver. Suddenly
her eyes narrowed and she threw the journals into her open closet and
slammed the door. "I will NOT let ANY of this get to me," she vowed. "Ever.
Even after all this time, I will not let Tom win."
Deciding not to dwell on the night's events anymore, she quickly changed her
clothes and got into bed. Staring out the open window across the room, she
could hear the rain pattering steadily against the building. Litt let it
lull her to sleep, and as she slipped off to dreamland, she whispered, "God
give me strength... to live the rest of my life with the memories of my
past."
Litt awoke the next morning with warm sunlight on her face, and she smiled
faintly. The call of seagulls and the smell of the beach brought her from
her bed and over to the window. The sky was faultless, and the sight of the
beach gave her her calling for the day. Too bad she had to work all
afternoon.
She got dressed and walked into the kitchen to find Rachel eating some
cereal.
"Where's Kat?" she asked quietly, looking through the pantry for something
to eat.
"School."
"When do you go?"
"When are you leaving?" she shot back.
"My shift doesn't start until 1:30."
After a moment of silence Rachel asked, "Who's Brian and Tom?"
Litt's face darkened and she turned to her. Rachel just looked back at her
innocently. "Rachel, that is none of your business."
"Aw, come on! I've already read most of that stuff - I know everything about
you! Tell me," she spoke determinedly as she stood up and put her bowl in
the sink.
Litt walked dangerously close to her and glared. "You don't know me at all,"
she spoke slowly and threateningly. "Don't even try to think otherwise. In
time, I might have told the two of you about my childhood, but you have
overstepped your bounds and now I will never EVER consider you my friends."
Rachel didn't seem intimidated by her anger and replied with that same
innocent expression on her face, "Tell me who they are."
Litt sighed resignedly. "Will you leave me and my things alone for the rest
of the time you know me?"
She nodded furiously. She was dying to know.
Litt noticed this about her and frowned. "Why are you such a busybody? And
why must you bother ME? I've never done anything to you. Ever."
"Just tell me!"
She sighed and closed her eyes, succumbing to the images that were forcing
their way into her mind. "Brian... was one of the sweetest people you'll
ever meet. He was like an angel sent from Heaven. Brian... was my best
friend. Tom... he was my father." She slowly opened her eyes with the last
words and saw the shocked expression on the girl's face.
"He-he was your own FATHER? Dude! This keeps getting better and better!"
Litt's eyes narrowed, and she couldn't contain herself anymore. Slapping her
harshly across the face, she snapped, "This isn't some made up story, you
inconsiderate bitch! This is my LIFE! And I'd appreciate it if you would
stay out of it!"
