Chapter 4
"Are you sure you guys don't wanna come?" Litt asked.
Kat nodded. "Yeah, sorry we can't show you around. But our books are calling
us. I've got a final tomorrow."
"Yeah, so do I," Rachel lied.
Litt shrugged. "Alright, see you later."
Upon shutting the door, Rachel jumped up from her seat and went towards
Litt's room while Kat went to get her books.
"What are you doing?" Kat raised an eyebrow at her friend.
Opening the door she replied, "I want to know what's in those notebooks. It
was obvious she didn't want us to know, so it's gotta be good."
Her jaw dropped. "I've known you forever, and yet you still don't cease to
surprise me. That's her private stuff, Rach, and you shouldn't be going
through it."
Ignoring her, Rachel entered the room and looked around. The notebooks were
no longer on the bed, but she quickly found them stuffed in a bookshelf. She
walked over and pulled them out. Flopping down on a bean bag, she opened the
one labeled #1, and examined the pages.
"Hey Kat!" she called. "You won't believe what I found. They're journal
entries. But they aren't your usual criteria."
Kat sighed and closed her textbook and set aside her notes. Getting up she
muttered, "I can't believe this." She went over to the doorway and leaned
against the frame. She crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow at Rachel.
"Dude, this is totally worth it. Listen to this -"
"No! I want no part of this. I can't believe you!"
"Seriously! Just listen to one, and then you can leave, alright?" she
bargained.
Kat sighed and waited.
"June 6, 1993. He did it again, like always. I always just seem to get in
his way, or even if I don't, he makes an excuse. But the worst is when he
just does it, just because he feels like it." Rachel stopped for a moment
and looked up. "Wow, I wonder if this is like an old boyfriend or something.
Or maybe the reason she's even in Miami is 'cause she's running from him."
Kat rolled her eyes. "Would you just finish? I've got morals, you know. And
this isn't any of our business."
"Just listen: He doesn't scare me, though. As much as he tries to look
menacing, it doesn't bother me. But it really pisses me off when he acts
like nothing happened. He got me pretty bad this time. Gave me a goddamn
black eye, major stomach pains, and I think I twisted my ankle. I'm just
bracing myself for when I have to go to school tomorrow. I'm gonna have to
come up with a new lie to keep everybody from asking questions. Mr. V's been
getting close, though, but he pretends that he hasn't got a clue. I know
he's just doing that 'cause I don't like talking about it, and I'm glad he
respects my space. Shit, Tom's pissy again. He's trying to break down my
damn door again. Guess it's time to jet." Rachel looked up when she was done
reading and saw the shock mirrored on Kat's face.
"Talk about a messed up life," she muttered.
"Wanna hear more?"
Kat nodded furiously and sat cross-legged on the bed.
"Alright," she picked up the third notebook and flipped through it. "Ok,
here's one. September 28, 1994. It's only been three days since I've been
brought here, and I miss Kentucky already." Rachel frowned. "I thought she
said she was from Arizona."
"She did. Just keep reading."
Rachel grinned at her. "Uh huh, that's what I thought. Ok, let's see...
where was I? Alright. I guess I liked it there a lot more than I realized,
but it's Brian I miss the most. Even though he didn't know, he still tried
to cheer me up and comfort me. I don't have ANYthing here. I just wish I
could see him once more just to see his reaction of what I told him. I can't
believe..."

Litt sighed dreamily as she walked along. She was out in the rain,
completely soaked. But she didn't mind. She was alone with her thoughts, and
that's all she wanted. The cold wet sand sank beneath her bare feet, and
squished between her toes. Although it was stormy out, the crash of the
waves on the shore gave the beach a sense of calmness. Her hair was matted
to her head, and stuck to the back of her neck. She was shivering, but she
ignored the cold.
Maybe I'll go back to Lexington for awhile, she thought. See the Adams', and
finally tell them how much I appreciate all of their help. Hopefully
Brian'll be around. I really want to see him. I HAVE to see him.
About two hours later, she had finally made her way back to the apartment to
find the girls' doors closed, and light shown from beneath them. Good, she
thought. I don't feel like talking. I'm exhausted.
But when she opened the door to her room, she found Kat and Rachel lounging
about, with her notebooks in hand. Their eyes got huge with surprise when
they laid eyes on her, and Litt was just blown away.
