Chapter 3
"You know, we're really glad you came along!" Kat, one of Litt's new
roommates, laughed as she took one of her two bags and lead her into the
apartment building.
"Yeah, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to afford the place," Rachel,
her other new roomy, agreed as she followed behind.
"Glad I could help," Litt grinned. "It's such a great place, though. The
right amount of space, and smack on the beach!"
Litt had stayed in a hotel for all of two nights, and in that time she had
scored both an apartment AND a job. Starting tomorrow she would be working
at Tower Records. She had landed the job so easily because of her knowledge
about the music industry.
Kat and Rachel were best friends, and had been so since grade school. They
were currently in their junior year at the University of Miami. They were
very friendly, and Litt was liking them already.
"Do you want us to help you unpack?" Kat asked cheerfully.
Litt grinned. "Got nothing better to do, huh?"
"Got that right."
"Alright, sure. It'll get done faster."
They had made it up to the tenth floor to the apartment, and the three went
into Litt's room. Their place was in the corner of the floor, which meant
they got two sides with windows.
Looking out the window, Litt frowned. "You know, if it weren't raining, I'd
ditch getting settled in and go straight to the beach!"
"I hear ya," Rachel agreed.
"Why'd you guys give me this room? It's the best one!" It was true, Litt's
room was the corner, and had big windows on two walls. She had a great view
of the beach.
"Because if it weren't for you, we wouldn't have been able to keep the
place," Kat replied.
Rachel grabbed Litt's backpack and unzipped it. The first thing she found
were three worn out notebooks, labeled: #1, #2, and #3. They were mostly
filled, except for the third one, which had a few blank pages in the back.
She frowned. "What are these?"
Litt quickly looked up from the bag she and Kat were unpacking and walked
over. Taking them she replied quickly, "Um, just some writing." She threw
them onto the bed and went back to her other bag.
" 'Just some'? Girl what the hell are you talking about?" Rachel demanded.
"That looks like a couple of books!"
Please don't be nosy! Litt begged. "It's worth three years," she spoke
simply. It's a book alright, she thought. A book of my life.
Rachel glanced at the notebooks skeptically and averted her attention. We'll
just see, she thought.

"Brian, can I ask you something?" Nick asked.
They were sitting on the floor of his room, playing Nintendo, and neither
one took their eyes from the screen.
"Shoot," he replied.
"What's been bugging you? It's like it's always been there, but it shouldn't
be. Does that make sense?"
"Yeah," Brian nodded absentmindedly as he concentrated on the game. "It's
just...I don't kow whether it's infatuation or love...but it's been a year.
I don't get it."
"Um, I didn't understand a WORD you just said!" Nick laughed.
Brian paused the game and turned to his friend. "About a year ago, before I
met you guys, this girl came to my school. She was real cute, but really
damaged too. There was so much she was hiding, but she refused to even skim
the subject. So I just tried to keep her smiling." He sighed. "She always
had this look in her eye. Haunted. Untrusting. Something like that. She
continued to go downhill, and even as she did, I found myself falling harder
and harder for her... Then one day after school she got into this fight with
some guys I had never seen before, and her foster mother found a suicide
note in her room. She was breaking down real fast, but there was nothing I
could do. She wouldn't let me. I felt...I felt...I don't know how I felt,
but it really sucked. Then all of the sudden the next morning she comes
knocking on my door, saying how she'd never see me again, and told me
everything. There was a different look in her eye then, like she had
resolved something. Well, she left before I could get any words out of my
mouth, and I never saw her after that. I went to where she had lived and
asked the family about her, but they refused to tell me anything. They said
that 'it would be best if I didn't know.' "
Nick's eyes were wide. "Dang! So you haven't been able to find her?"
Brian shook his head and sighed.
"You know, I thought it thought it was something Kevin had done to you. He's
always starting stuff," Nick grumbled.
Brian laughed. "Nick, he only does that 'cause he thinks you're on immature
little freak!"
"Man, shut up!"
