Chapter 2
"Well," Sam Williams, the head of the board, finally said, after looking
through Litt's files. "Very impressive. I'm quite surprised, really. I never
thought you would actually put any effort forth. But here you are."
Litt sat uncomfortably across the table from him, keeping a mask of
confidence on her face. Mike sat to the left of her, while her two
psychologists sat on either side of Mr. Williams.
"So what are your plans?"
Wow, he's actually letting me talk, she thought sarcastically, trying to
calm her stomach. She despised the man. "Well, with my background and lack
of money, I won't be able to to get into college. Instead, I plan to move to
Miami, and share an apartment with some roommates. Then of course I'll get a
job and stuff."
"What do you want to DO with your life?"
Litt had thought about all of the questions that he would ask her the night
before, so she had quick replies. The only problem was that she didn't KNOW
what she wanted to do with her life. The truth, she thought to herself. The
only way you can get out of this place is with the truth. "To tell you the
truth, I don't really know. The only kind of thing that interests me is the
arts. Maybe I'll join a theater company, take dance lessons, or be in the
music business." She shrugged and looked at Mr. Williams' blank face. "I
guess I'll just have to try stuff."
He leaned forward and replied, "But all of these occupations don't have a
strong backing - or one at all for that matter."
She was getting frustrated by him, and she knew that no matter what she
said, he wouldn't be satisfied. "Look, I'm not talking about something
that's gonna pay the bills, I'm talking about something that I'm going to
enjoy. Besides, that's not your place anyway. I don't need to go to business
school to get the hell out of here! I've changed my ways, and you know it.
That's all that matters in this situation. From here on out I take care of
myself, without you guys on my back about whether I'm gonna be a lawyer or
not!"
As he sat back in his chair, Litt saw the familiar angry flare in his eyes,
but he pushed it away. "Yes, that is true. But living in poverty can do many
things to people. It could possibly turn you right back into that demon
child."
She raised an eyebrow. Demon Child? No way. I was just a bit upset. "That's
not going to happen, and you know it. Why are you giving me such a hard
time?"
"We're just thinking of all the possibilities," one of the psychologists
spoke quietly.
"Well it's unnecessary," she snapped. She was trying hard to control her
anger, and she could tell Mr. Williams was doing the same.
He sighed deeply and scribbled something down in a notebook. "Alright,
alright. Get outta here. You're free. But I want phone numbers and
addresses, I want to know where you are, where you work, everything."
She nodded as she stood. "Yeah, I know the drill. I'll pass on the info
through Mike."
The others stood as well, and Mr. Williams nodded. He stuck out a hand and
she shook it. he said, "Agreed."
Now Litt couldn't keep the smile from her face, and as she walked towards
the door she said, "Well, it's been a pleasure and all," she spoke
sarcastically, "But it's time to let the next generation have a go."
"Oh, dear God no! Not another one of you!" Mr. Williams spoke in fake
theatrics.
She grinned at him, waved, and turned her back on him and her dreaded
therapists for the last time.
*Brian's point of view -
"Brian? Did you hear what I said?" Kevin glared at his cousin and punched
him on the arm to snap him out of it. "Would you stop that? You're driving
me nuts!"
Brian blinked and looked at him apologetically. "I'm sorry, man. What were
you saying?"
He sighed and shook his head. "Just forget about it," he grumbled. "Look, we
can call it quits for the day, because it's obvious no more work's gonna get
done," he said as he put all the papers they had been looking at back into a
folder. "Go bug Nick or something."
"Ok, well, I'll be back later." Brian stood up and left the room.
Kevin watched him go and shook his head. "What is WITH him?"
Brian got into his car and drove over to his best friend's house. He spent a
lot of his time over there; it was like a second home for him, and the
Carters were like an adopted family. As he walked up the sidewalk, the front
door was thrown open and Leslie bolted out, with Nick on her tail.
"Save me!" she wailed, and hid behind him. "Don't let him get me!"
"Oh no you don't!" Nick countered, with an evil grin on his face as he came
up to them. "Brian, get out of the way! She's gonna pay!"
He laughed and demanded, "What did she do now?"
But Nick didn't answer. Leslie took off running again, and he followed suit.
"I'll be inside!" Brian called after him as they rounded the corner towards
the backyard. "Ya know, in case you decide you'd like to entertain your best
friend instead of your sister!" He laughed to himself as Leslie let out an
earpiercing scream, followed by a loud splash.
"That's what you get!" he heard Nick yell triumphantly.
Walking towards the door, he shook his head. "That's the Carter Way," he
mumbled to himself. "Don't get mad, just get even."
