1996 saw the release of PANTERA"s most aggressive album yet, THE GREAT SOUTHERN TRENDKILL. Moodier songs like SUICIDE NOTE PART 1, 10's, FLOODS, & WAR NERVE saw the band explore new territory with a darker edge. A video was shot for the single DRAG THE WATERS. A massive tour package followed with the band headlining WAR OF THE GARGANTUANS with WHITE ZOMBIE, DEFTONES, & EYEHATEGOD. Eventually, the band coheadlined OZZFEST 1997 with BLACK SABBATH, MARILYN MANSON, FEAR FACTORY, and SEVENDUST.

After countless years of touring, being included in metal festivals overseas as well as in the US, PANTERA felt the time was right to record a live album. 101 PROOF OFFICIAL LIVE emerged as a classic must have live CD for any metal fans collection. Featuring such PANTERA classics as SUICIDE NOTE PART 2, BECOMING, NEW LEVEL, and 2 new studio tracks WHERE YOU COME FROM and I CAN’T HIDE, 101 PROOF was a sigh of relief for those fans who had yet to see nor hear PANTERA live. It was also another chance for the band to tour, dominating summer amphitheaters with COAL CHAMBER, MACHINE HEAD, and ANTHRAX in tow.
