Community Involvement:
When
people think of public relations, most think of "publicity" and "meeting
the public." However, those are only two of the many functions of Public
Relations. One of its most important --- is successfully affecting how
people view (their attitude towards) an organization.
The attached
letter from
Stephen G. Noone, ICE Industrial Cooperative Education
School to Work Coordinator, to Janette Gann, DTM, is an excellent
example of how our members fulfill this very important role in the
community.
Which recent award winning
toastmaster is known as "the Bulb Lady" in the Master Gardener arena?
If a hint would be helpful, try this: Her father was a toastmaster for
30 years and a past District 44 Governor If you guessed Outstanding Division
Governor of the Year Dixie Humphreys --- you guessed right!
Ahh, there's more
about this Toastmaster you may not know. Read on.
His bio starts like a
Zane Grey western story, but leads to the halls of Parliamentary order.
Being named The 1999-2000 Outstanding Committee Chair for District 3 may
not surprise you after viewing the previous accomplishments of District
3's Parliamentarian: Dwayne Roberts.
When the Lectern is Empty:
Yale
University has its skull and crossbones society - a secret group of insiders.
The Boy Scouts has its own elite corps - the Order of the Arrow.
And now, Toastmasters has its own highly esteemed group of insiders. Though
they’ve been around for awhile, Steve Broe, DTM, is the first to
publicly reveal the presence and inner workings of this cadre of crack
orators. He calls this group of minutemen the "Speakers
of the Empty Lectern." You may be one of them.
Club Name Change: JDA
Comm Toastmasters, Club #3333, is changing its name to Airpark Toastmasters.
The name change is to help position the club as a community club.
Meeting Change: Easyrisers
changes its meeting place to the restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Viad
Building, 1850 N. Central Ave., Phoenix. The club meets Wednesday's at
6:15am.

to Superstition Toastmasters! The club celebrated its 50th Anniversary
in August.
Paradise Valley Toastmasters
is planning a club meeting in conjunction with a five mile hike sponsored
by the American Cancer Society in November. The club's plan is to hike
a mile, then do Table Topics. Hike another mile - and a speech will be
given. Another mile - another speech. Evaluations
beyond that hill thar?
Public speaking and public
health together - this makes great publicity and a chance to tell a very
fit world about the greatest program in self-improvement. Contact Mike
Whitaker at driwash2@prodigy.net
for details as they emerge.
A success story: Club
52 and Speechcraft. Club uses an Open
House and Speechcraft to stay vibrant when half of its membership is
lost to a corporate shuffle. A Speechcraft graduate, who is now an
Area Governor, Vasanti Deshpande, ATMS/CL seeks to let other clubs
know the value of this program.
International Convention:
Toastmasters
from around the world met August 23-26, 2000 in Miami Florida for T.I.'s
69th Annual Convention.
From the opening to closing
ceremonies Region 3 rocked. Five of the twenty five Distinguished Districts
were from Region 3, including District 3. The World Champion speaker
is Ed Tate, District 26, Region 3. A dynamic, energetic 90
minute educational session "So What, Who Cares" was given by 1989 Golden
Gavel winner Joel Weldon, District 3, Region 3. Joanna
McWilliams, District 50, Region 3, was elected and installed as International
President. Art Nieto moderated a session of "Club Building" experts."
Seven of us from Arizona,
Art
Nieto, Dee Dees, Kelli McDoulett, Virginia Richtar, Mike Herskovits, Joel
Weldon and myself were honored to have represented the members of District
3. - PJ Glauz, DG
When Speech, Um, Gets
in the Way of, Ah, Getting Ahead. The Washington Post published an article
on August 20, highlighting how a group like Toastmasters can make a difference
to a career. This link was forwarded to d3tm by John Munns, District
36. To view the article, go to http://www.washingtonpost.com
Toastmasters Leadership
Institute (TLI) completed its Summer 2000 series of classes with
the August 19 session held in Tucson. TLI Chair, Nancy Starr,
DTM, says it was the most successful series to date --- 430 Toastmasters
were trained in TLI's three sessions. "The feedback we've received,"
said Nancy, "will help us focus on specific improvements for the spring
term, such as increasing the "Veteran Officer" training classes. Past TLI
Chairman
Judy Norris has been appointed, with the help of Dr.
Pat Gangi, to organize those sessions." Read
Nancy's Full Report. Includes FAQs and future dates.
