The person who says, "You don't have to make a speech, all you have to do is introduce the speaker," is guilty of a gross understatement, according to Tom Gloria, Sergeant-at-Arms, ISC WestWinds.

Tom's Tips for an introduction:
* Thoroughly prepare what you are going to say.
* Follow the T-I-S formula (T=topic, I=importance, and S=speaker)
*Be enthusiastic and sincere.

The "Money Hat," worn by Silent Auction chair Tammy Matthews, Class Act, was taken home (with the money) by Julie Schruel, American Expressors. Current attempts to reach Julie, to see if she really was going to Disneyland, have not been successful.

Several toastmasters took notes during the many events and if you were unable to attend the conference, or a concurrent session, their reports may fill that gap.

Jane Kimball, Vistoso Voices and Fountain Flyers, highlights the key points of the Keynote address by Joel Weldon.

Lucille Houston, Gila Division Governor, Twilite, summarizes the speech given by Kathleen Mitchell following the presentation to her of this year's Communication & Leadership Award.

Get a full grasp of the Business Meeting. Read the minutes as recorded by District Secretary DeeAnne Michael, DTM.

The well designed Conference Program, prepared by Janice Winscot, Media Masters,  had a "trivia" page with such interesting items as; "The first inter-club contest was held at the 1938 convention in Tucson, Arizona.  Subjects were selected at noon; the contest began at 2 pm -- truly extemporaneous!" The program booklet also listed Member Awards, Club Awards, the Presentations, an agenda, a conference recognition page and more!

According to Lt. Governor Education & Training, PJ Glauz, DTM, evaluation forms submitted by attending Toastmasters contained the following comments:

"The one day agenda works for me"
    "Brian was an excellent Toastmaster."
"Keynote address (Joel Weldon) was Great"
"Great venue, didn't have to walk from building to building"
    "Joel Weldon was wonderful"
    "Excellent conference"
"Outstanding C&L recipient - Kathleen Mitchell"
"Really liked the one day format"
    "Great job coordinators"

Next, on the agenda for Conferences, is the Region III Conference (agenda and registration form), June 16-17, in Galveston, Texas, where District 3's contestant will compete with the winners from the seven other districts in the region.

"A mind is a terrible thing to lose during Table Topics" - an item from Pinacor Real Talkers' newsletter, Speakeasy, Joy Marshall, Editor.

Three years ago District 3 achieved "Distinguished District" with the battle cry: "Distinguished or Die!" The following year the troops rallied with "One bite at a time." When a district achieves "Distinguished" three years in a row, it receives a coveted "Leadership in Service" award. D3 Governor Kelli McDoulett writes in her DGs Message --- it can be done again by "Working Together."

The Outstanding Toastmaster of the Year Program for 1999-2000 will end June 30. Candidate submissions are due (in Virginia Richtar's mailbox or in her hands) on or before July 10. To request mailing instructions. Virginia also reminds us there is still time to "Beat The Clock."
