Dear family and friends,

Hello, how is everyone? I am well, if slightly tired and getting colder!

So, now I have begun classes and it's great! All my lecturers are professors which makes me think there's a different scale as to how one becomes a professor over here, especially considering some of them are only around thirty. my classrooms are exactly that, classrooms and so small - there's maybe 50-60 people in each of my classes which is weird. My subjects are really cool - I am doing Greek Philosophy and my prof. is just so excited by it all and she marvels at the wonder and beauty of life, she set us homework for tonight to just think about how wonderful we are, how if we want to lift an arm we just think about it and we can lift an arm...this may sound batty as I'm writing it down, but it made perfect sense when she said it. My Greek Epic lecturer is the most energetic person I've ever met and he gets excited about some writing style I've never heard of that apparently Homer uses all the time, so I'd probably better get used to it hey?

We had our first Totem Park dance on the weekend (very amusing as most residents are between 17-19 and the drinking age here is 19, so many many many drunk people) and I'm starting to get to know so many more people, I tell you Canadians are just lovely. I was on the bus and I had no idea where my stop was and without evening asking people volunteer information and will help you out. People chat to you in the streets and they have gorgeous accents. Only problem is I've just been informed of all the dangerous and big creatures who are out to eat me here - we have bears, lynxs, cougars, coyotes, wolves..and I'm sure I've forgotten some! I'm not sure if I want to be travelling out into the countryside now! I'm told that if I "look big" they won't come near me..unfortunately looking big means looking bigger than them, how do you look bigger than a bear?

I have started checking my post box daily. Still no-one sends me any mail. I sent myself some mail but that doesn't count as I put it in there first. I think I'm just excited that I have a post box.

My friend has invited me to go home with her for Christmas to Salt Lake City in Utah - yay, snow! which is very exciting, I'm going to see lots and lots of Mormons! I have even met a Canadian who's coming to UQ next semester on exchange - now why didn't I meet anyone from UBC in Brisbane before I left? Unfair really how these things work.

okay, I am going to head off and do some reading before my next class now, I hope everyone is well and taking care of themselves ( and getting warm, it should be warm). Do write back to me and tell me what's going on, I really do want to hear from everyone, else I'll get home and be in a vacuum!

Sarah
