The Latest Shtuff - news about our lives

I've just had a second epidural/steroid injection in the L5 nerve. It's supposed to shrink the nerve that is being compressed. It's working but not as much as I would hope. Better than what I've been going through anyway.

We were in the projected path of hurricane Rita for a couple of days but now that it has moved to the east we will most likely just get humidity. As far as I know this is the first time that Waco has ever been under hurricane watch. Considering how far we are from the coast that's not surprising. We live across the street from a church that is being used as a shelter for evacuees but it's not as packed as some of the other churches. It's been just crazy these past few days. The highway had been at a stand still with everyone evacuating Houston. The gas stations were running out of gas and there was no bottled water to be found. Of course, in typical Waco fashion, everyone was stocking up on food just like when they predict an ice storm. I realize we don't have a levee system like that did in New Orleans when Katrina hit 3 weeks ago but we are surrounded by rivers on all sides with man made lakes in Waco & upstream. The odds of us flooding like they did isn't likely under the worst case scenerio but still it seems to me like stocking up on food the way people have been is ...well... kind of foolish? New Orleans flooded up to the rooftops in 3 minutes time according to people who were recording it with their camcorders as it was happening. That wouldn't have given any time to get to and/or carry food and water with them. In our case they were originally expecting some major power outages. Again I wonder what good it would do to stock up if your fridge is down? I can see maybe pre-made dry goods just in case, charcoal if you don't have a gas range or grill, that kind of stuff. Maybe I'm just strange?

I spent the best part of August in bed with severe pain so I'm skipping right on to September.

Last month Kadi & the kids were here for a week. Luckily that week was better than the others pain wise. Here's one of the pictures we had done while they were here. Armani is 5 now and Dominic was 4 months old in this picture.

The rest of the family are doing fine. Craig's knee healed up beautifully and he graduates from physical therapy on Tuesday. Scott's band(s) broke up but he has a new girlfriend so he doesn't really seem to mind. Josh is still doing bonusstage.com but also had a free lance article on Disney's movies.com. David is still working in Dallas but has a "new" car that gets much better gas mileage than the truck did.

Congratulations to Heather our niece in Ohio who, at age 20, just bought her first house!

So anyhow, back to my back. The condensed version is that so far as we know the pain that has kept me moaning, crying and screaming in the absolute literal sense of those words is coming from the L5 nerve. I have a bone spur pressing against a bulging disk pressing against the nerve. I had a steroid shot in the nerve a week ago and am doing a lot better than I was but still have moments of extreme pain. At the moment I'm still taking pain medication but am hoping that won't be needed soon. That's all we know so far. I'm hoping that if I have to end up with surgery that it can be done with a laproscope. Seems like it could be, doesn't it?
