Macross The Movie :DYRL

Synopsis:

This is based off the very popular series Macross aka Robotech First Generation. But before I give you the synopsis of the film I have to give you some background information on the film. The year is 1999 a spaceship crash-lands on earth ending a Global War. The ship is rebuilt and in 2010 it is about to go off into space for its test run but is attack by an Alien force know as the Zentradi in an attempt to reclaim their ship. War breaks out and the ship is forced to use an unknown space fold drive and ends up taking Macross Island with it. The show tells how Rick Hunter aka Hikaru, an amateur pilot gets involved in this war and reluctantly joins the war to impress a girl. Well the Macross movie is a basic retelling of this story with a new twist. First off the Movie starts off three months after the incidents I just told you occurred.

A battle rages between the Zentradi and SDF Macross crew, during this battle Hikaru saves Minmei a young popular singer/actress aboard the Macross. The two accidentally, get trapped in a cellblock of the massive ship and eventually within the week they are trapped and fall in Love. However their romance is cut short when they eventually find the two missing lovebirds and for Minmei its back to work and for Hikaru he gets into trouble because he disobeyed Misa Hayase's commands. Misa Hayase is a high commander in the UN Spacey forces and clearly hates Hikaru guts but since he did save Minmei he will be pardoned this time from court martial. Minmei later on in the film disguises herself and goes out on a date with Hikaru but what apparently turns out to be a joy ride in a mech ends up as disaster. First off Misa and Minmei brother come on the com link screaming at the two, but worse problems arise, as a Zentradi force are order to capture human specimens.

Luckily for Hikaru his best friend Roy Folker tries to come to his rescue and a battle ensues but the Zentradi eventually capture the earthlings. On the ship they are questioned about human emotions and eventually the all Female Zentradi group known as the Meltradi come and start a fight Hikaru, Misa, and Roy try to make a break to try and save Minmei but Roy ends up sacrificing his own life to save Misa and Hikaru's. Misa and Hikaru learn that the Zentradi and Meltradi are in fact at war with each other a startling revelation. Hikaru tries to save Minmei with the help of Misa, but his mech gets caught in a space fold to earth and he wonders what will become of her. The two lands on earth not knowing at first that this completely decimated planet without life is earth. Eventually the two find out that it is indeed earth and learn about an Ancient Alien Society that lived on earth before the humans and Zentradi and many revelations come about from this. Thinking that they are the last two earthlings alive Misa and Hikaru eventually fall in love.

After a month on earth the Macross aka SDF 1 eventually lands and the two are saved and realize its back to work for them. Eventually the crew of the Macross learn the secrets about the past but get attacked by the Meltradi forces the Zentradi come to save the earthlings with the help of a song and Minmei's voice. A peace treaty is signed and now Hikaru is caught in a love triangle with Misa and Minmei and to top it off the Meltradi are back in full force and the Zentradi complete force has broken the treaty with the earthlings. It seems that all out war is upon the Macross and the only thing that can save them now is an ancient song that they don't have the lyrics to yet. Will the Macross find the lyrics or will it be the extinction for the earthlings you have to watch the movie to find out?

Review:

The Macross movie is still to its day considered the number 1-anime movie of all time in Japan. It is truly a classic, this is one of the first anime movies in which the crew all seem real and face real problems in life like the justification of war, peace, and love triangles. The animation for this movie is of the 80's but is unlike any anime yet of its time. The animation is simply great and looks still like something new. The plot is still one of the best to date and can greatly rival the plot of Akira any day. Let it be known that yes the characters in this movie are the robotech characters but this movie retains the Japanese plot and does not in any way call the characters by their Robotech names nor follows the robotech timeline this is the way Robotech Macross saga was suppose to be, before the story was altered. That's why they never call this the Robotech movie but Macross the Movie.

The soundtrack for the film is a great reminder of the show and the main theme in the movie song is still considered one of the all time popular anime songs. This movie is really great and you don't have to have seen the Robotech or the Macross shows to watch this film because it gives you the basic retelling of the whole show in one movie just a bit altered. This movie may be hard to find since it was never domestically released here however you can find some region 1 dvd's of it in Ebay and other retailers, I highly recommend that any anime fan watches this classic!
