Background
Ash, over the time of his journeys, he has learned more and more from each of his battles.  Although Pikachu was a handful at the very start of his journey, Ash and Pikachu did eventually come to an understanding and are now best friends.  He received Pikachu because he slept in the morning Professor Oak was handing out Pokémon to new trainers.  As he was traveling to the first town, Ash hit a Spearow on the head with a rock, causing a flock of Spearow to chase after him.  Just as the Spearow closed in for the kill, Pikachu realized that Ash was running to protect him, so Pikachu shocked all of the Spearow away.  However, this severely drained the little Pokémon's power, so Ash had to rush off to go and get Pikachu to the nearest Pokémon center in Viridan City. To get there faster, he took a bicycle, later found out to be owned by Misty, one of the Cerulean gym leaders, to get there faster.  Later on, after Misty caught up with Ash in Viridan city, Ash had his first confrontation with Jesse, James, and Meouth, part of Team Rocket, a notorious gang of Pokémon thieves.  Ash defeated them easily, which makes them want to capture Ash's Pikachu ever since.  Next, after defeating the Pewter City Gym Leader, Brock, he decided to join Ash's group.  Ash has gone through several trials and, surprisingly, come out on top of each trial.  Ash is now in the Johto lands and is now trying to prove himself once and again that he's the greatest trainer on the planet.

Personality
Ash, at the beginning of his journey, was very ambitious and very inexperienced.  It also showed when he tried to capture a Spearow by himself without the aid of Pikachu.  Over time, Ash has gotten wiser, but still has to learn from his mistakes.  Sometimes, he even learns lessons in beating Team Rocket.  However, he tries to let his Pokémon's power win the battle.  But, ever since his battle in the goldenrod gym, he may start to think more about using strategy to defeat the gym leaders.
