Shinji's great Evangelion
Ikari Shinji is a young Evangalion pilot. The poor boy is only fourteen, yet he and the other Eva pilots are sent out with regular monotany to fight the ever-advancing Angels. Unsurprisingly he often feels that he is only a tool and not a person, and sometimes also feels that he cannot relate to anyone, not Misato, his overseer, Toji and Kensuke, his friends, Asuka, the crazy German girl and definitely not to Rei, the silent girl who once hit him for saying he didn't trust his father.
Shinji normally feels very insecure and often has to tell himself that he 'mustn't run away'. At the start of Evangelion his first reaction on being told that he must pilot the giant and mysterious Evangelion-01 was total fear and the worry that he would not be very good at it. It is only Rei's condition that makes him pilot it, after seeing how badly she was hurt and how Gendou would make her pilot it regardless. Also, the Eva protects him without him even being in it, but saving him from a falling chunk of ceiling. When he passes out in his first match against an Angel, the Eva continues to fight, being labelled a 'Beserker'. And when it's head falls off at the end, it terrifies Shinji by opening its eye and looking at him. (Note: I will admit that it did quite alarm me too - Kachi)
