Rei Ayanami is another pilot, who pilots Eva 00. In her first test run, the Eva went beserk, smashing windows, ejecting the pilots pod and generally causing havoc until it ran out of power. Rei was seriously hurt, and was only able to come back on duty after Shinji Ikari had already fought two Angels. She found herself protecting him from a giant cube of an Angel while he tried to get a precision shot - to make it explode. It was in this episode that we first saw Rei smile, after Shinji's specific request. She seems to love Shinji's father Gendou Ikari greatly, and when Shinji said he had no trust in his own father, she slapped him. She claims to have no past, and when she goes to fight, she says goodbye. It is no wonder that Shinji was so worried.
She doesn't appear to get along too well with Asuka, although it can be very hard to tell, as Rei seldom shows any kind of emotion whatsoever. Asuka calls her "Wondergirl" and appears to be very jealous of both the way that she pilots her eva, despite the fact she had severe syncronisation problems at the start, and the relationship that she has with both Shinji and Gendou, even though Shinji seems to be unnerved every time Rei is near him, and also is a little jealous about Rei's relationship with his father.
