Benefits of Using Online Dietary Journaling Websites

There are two main benefits to online dietary journaling and they are self-monitoring and self-directed education.

Self-Monitoring

The internet can be a convenient and inexpensive tool.

Self-Directed Education

The internet is a growing tool for delivering education.

The internet allows the delivery of learning at

the time the learner needs it, and is ready to learn.

Studies have shown that individuals who monitor their dietary intake are more likely to be successful at weight management or weight loss than those who do not. There are many factors that come into play when it comes to monitoring your intake. When you monitor your intake, you are more aware of what you are consuming. This also makes you accountable for the food you consume. It is easy to consume excess calories, when you are not thinking about what you are eating. When you take the time to think about what you are eating, you become aware of the amount of calories that you are actually eating.

Self-monitoring can help individuals reach specific nutrition related goals or succeed in weight management efforts. There is some skepticism as to whether or not online education is desirable and can be effective in improving knowledge of a subject. This may be due to the fact that there is a lot of inaccurate information on the internet. If an individual goes to a web site that has wrong information, this may cause confusion in the future. Another reason why online education may not be desirable, is due to the inability to ask questions. If you are in an online environment, there is no teacher/student interaction. This can be an important part of the learning process.

There are a few studies that are available, that demonstrate the benefits of online journaling. Wallner and colleagues concluded that the knowledge of study participants increased and a majority of participants found the online format to be a convenient and effective means of continuing education.

Adult learners can specifically benefit from using an online environment due to time demands.
