Englewood
The South Side of Chicago is the most well known area of Chicago next to the Loop. It has a notorious reputation along with that recognition. The South Side was once the urban core of Chicago. Throughout hitsory it was a melting pot for European immigrants and the headquarters for Al Capone, and the rest of gangland Chicago. Blacks migrated from the south to the south side and reshaped the legacy of this large area. It quickly became the Harlem of Chicago. Sadly, many facors all played a role in the downfall of much of the southside. Those factors include expressways, bad public housing and loss of jobs. Much of the south side is filled with empty lots where buildings used to stand. There are many neighborhoods that remained intact however. Today, redevelopment is slowly making its way from the south loop to the neighborhoods further south.
