Final Fantasy VIII Wins Game of the Year Award
The 4th 'Japan Game of the Year Ceremony' was held in Tokyo, yesterday. 15 magazines and 7 magazine publishers all sent a massive 8,400 votes to decide what was 'the game of the year'. Though it's hardly shocking, it came as a pleasent suprise to find that the 'Grand Prix' award (The highest accolade) went to Square's masterpiece, Final Fantasy VIII, with Nintendo's Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time being pushed into second place, gaining the 'Semi-Grand Prix' award. Not only that, but FFVIII also won the awards for both best visuals and, thanks to Nobuo Uematsu's incredible soundtrack, best sound. It was mostly suprising to find FFVIII gaining the top-spot, as opposed to Zelda when you consider that FFVIII was rated 3 marks lower (37/40) than the unprecedented 'perfect' score of 40/40 given to Zelda, by Famitsu.
