Well, a bloke has to been known for something right? and thanks to my mother and my cousin Lisa (who owns her own hair dressing and told all her clients about it), I'm pretty much known for my gnome-napping pastime. Ya see, a few years ago, a mate and I decided to take a trip around the North Island of New Zealand. The plan was to jump into my car and pretty much throw a dart at a map and drive there and see the place. We stayed wherever we felt like it, and we had a great time - I would've had a better time if I'd been able to protect my ears from the jack-hammer type noise of mate mate snoring!!!! So about now you're starting to say "so what does a gnome have to do with the price of fish then??" Well, to make the trip more interesting, we thought we'd steal a Garden Gnome from somebody's house. The plan was to get photos of the gnome in front of famous New Zealand landmarks and then send the gnome and the photos back to the owner to show them the little trip theri 'friend' had been on :-) It went well, and everyone thought it was hilarious. It's just a shame that we never got to see the owner's faces. Oh and yes, I know that apparently other people have done this, and it was even a TV ad in some country, but believe me, we never knew that beforehand, so I suppose you could say we were one of the originals? :-)
The story even got around so much, that come my 21st Birthday I was given my very own gnome (which is the one in these pictures - I have to get the original gnome pictures scanned and add them here soon). Here is the message that was on the card that accompanied the gnome:
We have heard of your penchant for gnomes. Here is your very own "Harold" the gnome. Take good care of him! we hear they are excellent travelling companions. "harold" assures us he has seen nothing and been gnomewhere!!
