I was in the Royal New New Zealand Army Logistics Regiment for roughly 2 1/2 years. Actually, I'm still in, I've just been on extended leave whilst I have been completing my degree. I am presently making up my mind as to whether or not I will get out once I start my new job or not.
A year or two ago, the goal was to try out for the Special Air Service (SAS). They are the most elite force in the world and were made famous by the British SAS in the Gulf War through patrols such as Bravo Two Zero (a book written by the leader of that patrol telling of the experiences of that patrol behind the Iraqi lines and the torture they suffered once captured by the Iraqis). the ONLY forces in the world that would be close to SAS standards and skill would be the special forces of Israel (MOSAD) and some of the German Special Forces Units, NOBODY else is as good. However, the further I got through my degree, the more I realised I'd be throwing away something I worked very hard for, and considering only 7% of those who try, make it into the SAS, it wasn't worth it. Also, you can kiss goodbye to having a wife and family, as you're never home and such a scenario would strain any family situation!!
I've had many interesting experiences and the one I was most honoured with doing was the Cenotaph Guard for ANZAC Day in 1997. ANZAC is the Day that NZ and Australia remember their war dead - ANZAC stands for Australia New Zealand Army Core. The above and below photos are from that guard.
This is my section from Basic Training relaxing after stalking and killing our enemy in a Skill At Arms competition - I'm in the middle with the rifle in the air and all the bush in my head! :-) hehe
