Jimmie Johnson 2002 Race Comments

2-17- Daytona 500-Not to bad of start for a rookie. Started on the pole! Finished 15th. Was caught up in an accident, but only lost 1 lap! Jimmie could be a force to recon with before to long!

2-24- Subway 400-Started 11th, finished 28th! Just a rookie! He'll do better!

3-3- UAW/DaimlerCrysler 400-Great run for the rookie! Finished 6th! Ran real well. Could have possibly won!

3-10- MBNA America 500-Another great run! 3rd place finish! Looks like Jeff Gordon is putting all his effort into this car! The Rookie is out doing him! Good job Jimmie!

3-17- Carolina Dodge Dealers 400-Another great run by this rookie! 6th place finish! Moves up to 5th in point standings. They must have a seasoned pit crew for this young man!

3-24- Food City 500-He does it again! 7th place finish! Jimmie is becoming real consistent! Started 33rd!

4-7- Samsung/Radio Shack 500-Another great run! 6th place again. Jimmie stands in 3rd place in the point standings! If he keeps this up, he could win a Championship!

4-14- Virginia 500-Jimmie's worst finish so far! 35th place. Developed a vibration and collects 1st DNF of the season. You just knew he couldn't keep up the pace he was on. Bad things happen to the best of them!

4-21- Aaron's 499-This boy is for real! Another top 10 finish (7th)! 2nd pole of the year! It's only a matter of time and Jimmie will win one!

4-28- NAPA 500-This was it! Jimmie's 1st win! I have a feeling there will be more! Gutsy call on last pit stop to take fuel only, but it payed off!

5-4- Pontiac Excitement 400-A rookie mistake took Jimmie out of this one. Being IMPATIANT! Trying to hard to get the lead from Jimmy Spencer, and spun out hitting the wall and ends up finishing 31st. Might have won if he would have kept his cool!

5-18- The Winston*-Very impressive run by this rookie! Won the first segment and $50,000! Won the second segment and another $50,000! Finished 5th in the third segment and another $50,000 for a total of $150,000! A nice pay check for a non point event! How will he do in the 600 miler next week?

5-26- Coca Cola 600-Wow! Rookie mistakes cost Jimmie this race. Dominated this race just like he did in The Winston last week! Led 263 laps! 2 miscues in the pits cost him the race. Both times he over shot his pit stall and had to back up. Loosing track position both times. This is Jimmie's year, but his mistakes are killing him. Still 5th in the point standings. He's not afraid to run it on the edge! That is what it takes!

6-2- MBNA Platinum 400-Look out! Another win by the rookie! Another dominating performance! Moved into 2nd place in the point standings!

6-9- Pocono 500-Wow! Jimmie is there at the end again! 3rd place finish! There is no stopping this kid!

6-16- Sirius Satellite Radio 400-A good run, but inexperience took Jimmie out of this one. He was looking real good there for awhile, but the veterens took over at the end! Finished 14th.

6-23- Dodge/SaveMart 350K-Bad day for Jimmie! I guess everybody has a bad one now and then. Broke down late in the race. Finished 35th!

7-6- Pepsi 400-Consistent! Another top 10 finish! Just laid back and stayed out of trouble and was there at the end! Penalized 25 points for rules violation. Seems like everytime there are points to be taken away, Jeff Gordon is involved! Jeff is the owner of the #48 car. He was also penalized 25 owner points for the violation. As I understand, Nascar new about the violation in pre-race inspection, but allowed Jimmie to run anyway. Then impose this penalty 3 days later!

7-14- Tropicana 400-There is no stopping Jimmie! Starts 33rd, finishes 4th! He is learning from the best, Jeff Gordon!

7-21- New England 300-Finished 15th. Remains 3rd in point standings! Just stayed out of trouble. Doing better than his boss!

7-28- Pennsylvania 500-Another 15th place finish. Just stayed out of trouble again!

8-4- Brickyard 400-Steady run! 37th to 9th! Moves into 2nd in the points! Seems to stay out of trouble week after week!

8-11- Sirius Satellite Radio@ the Glen-Not a good day, but not that bad! 16th place!

8-18- Pepsi 400-A good run. Started 29th, finished 7th! Staying right there in the point hunt! Holding on to 3rd!

8-24 -Sharpie 500-Jimmie has a bad day! 34 th place finish! Accident! DNF! Wow! Still 5th in points though!

9-1- Mt. Dew Southern 500-9th place finish! Good day considering Jimmie cut a tire. He might have won this one!

9-7- Chevrolet Monte Carlo 400-Another consistent run! Finishes 13th and moves into 3rd in point standings, only 82 points out of 1st! Picks up his 4th pole of the year!

9-15- New Hampshire 300-Top 10 finish again! Awesome! Jimmie has a good shot at the Championship!

9-22- MBNA 400-Big Win! This guy is unreal! Moves into 2nd in the point standings, only 40 pts. out! Just think, if Jimmie hadn't had the 25 pt. penalty earlier in the season, he would only be 15 pts. out!

9-29- Protection One 400-Jimmie finishes 10th and takes the point lead! Will he be able to hang on to it? Looks like it will go down to the wire this year! 1st rookie ever to lead in the point standings!

10-6- EA Sports 500-Bad luck for all 4 Hendrick cars. Engine failures! Jimmie finished 37th! Bumped to 3rd in the point standings. Can still win the championship though. 6 races left! Hang in there Jimmie!

10-13- UAW-GM Quality 500-6th place finish! Moves to 2nd in points! Needs a little help from Tony Stewart! Come on Tony, It's about time to hit the wall!

10-20- Old Domimion 500-Another 6th place finish! Gains 15 points on the point leader with 4 races remaining! Come on Jimmie, you can do it!

10-27- NAPA 500-Spin, late in the race. Finished 22nd, 1 lap down in rain shortened race. Drops to 3rd in points.

11-3- Pop Secret 400-Bad day! All but eliminates Jimmie from winning the championship. Pit crew really screwed up today. Left some lug nuts loose, tore up the car, and Jimmie went 12 laps down. Needs a miracle to win the championship now!

11-10- Checker 500-15th place finish. Not bad considering where he started, 37th!

11-17- Ford 400-Great season for a Rookie! Finished 8th in todays race! Finished 5th in Point Standings, and 2nd for Rookie of the year! Hard to believe that Jimmie finished higher in cup points than Ryan Newman, but Ryan Newman takes Rookie of the year! To many DNF's I guess! Can't wait until next year!
