Streaming means
the entire content file is being broken down and
compressed into much smaller, individual content pieces
transferred from the website to the user’s PC. Each
piece is independently decompressed and displayed as it
reaches its destination, without “waiting” for the rest
of the content to arrive.
To date, streaming technology
is the most efficient solution provided to overcome the
bandwidth issues.
The lack of standards however,
proved to be the greater obstacle of the two.
As mentioned before, the
standard media on the web are text and still
images. “Standard
media” means that a webmaster can simply upload content
to a website and to know with complete confidence that
any user can access this website and view its content
(text and imagery) regardless of geographic location,
browser type, machine specifications or operating
