The existing solutions create a substantial amount of
new problems and issues. To mention a few:
It is no longer a trivial task to add content
to a website
Special encoding procedures
need to be applied. A webmaster must become proficient
in operating an encoding software and media-server
hardware. One can forget about the good old
“Drag’n’Drop” wrist operation for content uploading to
websites.
Total cost of ownership (TCO) increases dramatically
Integration of the streaming media
solution with the existing web environment is difficult,
not easily scalable and requires special equipment,
unique technical skills, intensive support and excessive
on-going maintenance.
Content visibility is extremely low
The need for a plug-in for viewing poses a great
barrier between the user and the content. Recent studies
show that less then 10% of the web population
uses plug-ins and people are largely driven away by
plug-in based content.
Plug-ins are space consuming (minimum 3MB), not
trivial to install (a different plug-in for every
machine) and mostly not backwards- compatible with
previous versions. Even in a situation where a user has
already installed the plug-in, there is no guarantee
that it is the correct version.
Bottom-line, out of a
100 visitors to your site,
less then 10 will
see your video content!
