MarkTime's Faves

9/20/01
Hello!  Here is a newer version of "MarkTime's Faves", a list of local and regional radio shows and stations I listen to, or can at least tolerate.  The latter is saying quite a bit, these days.  Please note that I can not always tape all of these, due to time and/or reception factors.  You can go ahead and request something on this list, but unless the station also appears on my tapeable list, and is either on at a time when I'm home (Free time...what the @#$%󦦻¡¼ñ¿« is that?!?), or is on a station I can get at work (may be on the 2nd floor, but may as well be a concrete bunker), you will be in for a long wait!

Radio I Like, at least a little:

540    XEJAZZ    Classical
570    KLAC      Michael Jackson [9am-noon] is a voice of reason in a sea of rabid right-wing wackos;  Dr. Dean Edell and Clark Howard offer sensible advice in medicine and finances, respectively
640    KFI      Phil Hendrie [7-10pm] talk show...ironically, done live in KFI studio 4-7pm, but run on tape on his own home station?!? (open secret: he does most of the voices)
790    KABC      "Mr. KABC" [7-10?pm] is about all I care for on this station anymore
830    KPLS      Don Imus [6-9?am] a bit more crochety in his old age, but occasionally worth a listen;  Michael Savage [4-7?pm] is ever-so-slightly more sensible than most of the other syndicated rightist wack-jobs on this station (such as B-1 Bob Dornan...)
930    KHJ       "La Ranchera", high-stepping Mexican country polkas
980    KFWB      news, traffic, Larry King, and lotsa spots.  Most news junkies I know prefer this to KNX?  1½ traffic reports every 10 minutes.
1020   KTNQ      Spanish oldies (sounds much like the Spanish version of "Music of Your Life", only without Wink Martindale, ha) {also on 98.3 and 103.9}
1070   KNX       news, traffic, sports, talk, old radio shows, and plenty of ads.  A bit less obnoxious than KFWB in my book.  Traffic reports every 6-8 minutes.
1260   KJAZ      jazz
1340   KWXY      easy listening and standards...a common type of station 20 years ago, but rare as a cold day in Palm Springs today.  Also KWXY-FM, on 98.5.  Can't hear here, but gets into San Bernardino and little bits of Riverside.  Semi-legend LA DJ Dave Hull is on late evening.
1510   KMXN      standards, some big band and a few soft AC tunes
1630   XEUT      mixed-bag college station out of Tijuana...have heard American oldies and rock, classical, jazz, old and new Mexican music, kiddie shows, and more.
88.1   KLON      jazz old and new, and some blues shows.  Also now on KUOR.
88.3   KUCR      jazz, classical, folk, rock, low-rider oldies, 70s soul, and much more
88.5   KCSN      mixed-use station from Cal State-Northridge...folk, bluegrass, "British Invasion", big band/swing, German easy listening, etc.
88.5   KSBR      mostly smoothjazz, but also some real jazz, blues, and some other weekend shows
88.7   KSPC      various forms of rock, but also some polkas, big band and old radio shows
88.7   KISL      folk, classical, world music and more, sometimes sneaking in from Avalon
88.9   KXLU      mixed rock, etc. station.  Almost never hear this myself (am too far from Loyola Marymount U.) but I sometimes get tapes of their "Molotov Cocktail" lounge/ez listening show from a friend in the area
88.9   KUCI      rock, blues, etc.
89.1   KUOR      former independent station, now simulcasting KLON
89.3   KPCC      mostly an automated news and public affairs robot, like all the other stations operated by Minnesota Public Radio, but occasionally sneaks in a local talk show
89.9   KCRW      mixed "eclectic" music, but also a lot of NPR and local public affairs and some live drama.  Home of Harry Shearer's Le Show [Sun 10-11am]
90.1   KBPK      automated AC most of the time, with occasional live and taped public affairs during the school day
90.1   KSAK      Rinky-dink little operation, rarely heard beyond the Mt. San Antonio campus
90.7   KPFK      News, public affairs, drama, various music.  I especially go for the science show "Explorations" [Sun 6-7p], Cosmic Barrio [M-F midday], The Nixon Tapes [Sat midday], and the Saturday morning folk/bluegrass block
91.1   XETRA-FM
91.5   KUSC      classical
91.9   KVCR      classical, but still has a bunch of NPR and PRI shows
94.3   KMXN-FM   hot AC, though the playlist gets a bit wider late nights
94.7   KTWV      smoothjazz
95.1   KFRG      country, hits and the occasional oldie
95.5   KLOS      just another classic rocker, but opens up the playlist a LOT when Jim Ladd is on [10p-2a or so]
96.7   KWIZ      Spanish soft AC, "La Romantica"
97.1   KLSX      hot talk, nasty talk, etc.  Used to like Tom Leykis [3-7pm] when he stuck to topics and politics, but now only an occasional diversion from music.
99.9   KOLA      standard-issue short-playlist 60s-70s old-fart station, but does have Dick Clark's Rock Roll & Remember on Sunday evenings
105.1  KMZT      classical

Oddball radio to note:

640    KFI        Has occasional guest appearances, in different (often unscheduled) time-slots by a "Rabbi Mentz" (who I swear is really Bill Handel after a bit too much wine), and a "Jesus Christ" (am even more sure this one's a put-on, ha)
1620    "KLWD"    PSAs, contact info, and other TIS-ish stuff, from Lakewood
1700    "WPMD"    PSAs, jazz, AC, etc - licensed as TIS, to Cerritos College
104.7   "KAPU"    ?? - Azusa Pacific U. {pirate or Part 15? Not heard yet)
"KIDZ"    kids - Part 15, operated by Wood Canyon Elementary School, Aliso Viejo
