Mairi's Shrimp was tied for Atlantic Salmon by Scottish Fly Tier, Ross Macdonald, with the thought that this might also be a great fly for steelhead. I agree. Ross writes, "I would like to share a pattern of mine which has been very successful for Atlantic Salmon on several of our rivers. It has been featured in Trout and Salmon and Fly-fishing and Fly-tying magazines. I thought the colour scheme might be of interest to my steelhead cousins across the pond." See his notes about fishing this fly below.
Ross's Notes: Has done particularly well in coloured water (not dirty), and in low light.
I like to handline and tend to cast nearer 60 degrees than 45. That said each to his own.
