Moose Turd

Name Moose Turd
Category Steelhead Surface Fly
Hook Dry Fly Hook
Thread Black
Tail White Calftail
Body Black moose hair, spun around hook shaft, and clipped to shape
Wing White calftail from the curly end, clipped at 1/2" to 3/4"

Dick Stewart and Farrow Allen, in their book, Flies for Steelhead, describe the Moose Turd as first tied by Bill McMillan in 1975. Bill McMillan felt that curled end, clipped  provided the best waking action for greased line steeelheading. To see more flies in the series, return to Favorite Surface Flies for Steelhead.
