Purple Parakeet, Eyed

Name Purple Parakeet, Eyed
Category Pacific Salmon
Hook Size 2/0 to 2, Salmon Hook of Choice
Thread Red
Tail Blue Marabou
Body Purple Zonker Strip Wrapped Around Hook, Accented With A few Strands of Blue and a Few Strands of Wine Krystal Flash
Collar Red Zonker Strip Wrapped a Couple Turns
Eyes Large Bead Chain
Head Red

The Parakeet was designed because of the great success I have had with wrapped zonker (rabbit) strip flies for fall Pacific Salmon. The Purple Parakeet is a different color variation the Parakeet (which see). This purple and red combination is often effective when other colors are not, especially for Silvers. This fly, literally swims like a minnow after the rabbit strip becomes saturated with water. The marabou wiggles like a tail and the rabbit fur body undulates with enticing action. The bead chain eyes add weight to keep it down in high water. Also see Parakeet, Orange/Black; Parakeet, Pink; Parakeet, Chartreuse/White for ideas about variations for this fly. I have also tied a Parakeet Tube Fly variation which will soon have its initial field test.
