Creek House History

The Creek House was built around 1914 by A. B. Philpott. During construction, he and his family lived in the house next door. In 1916, A.B.'s funeral was held on the front porch of the Creek House. After his death, his wife lived in the house until 1929 when she, Virgie Haynes and Rosie Barnes moved down the road to a house that was located near the railroad tracks across from the Philpott Mercantile Store. In 1924, A.B.'s son, Charles Thomas married Christine Prillaman and they moved into the Creek House, living downstairs, until 1929 when his mother moved down the road. At that time, they moved upstairs. Betty Jo Philpott Martin and Mary Adlynn Philpott Wilson were born in the Creek House in 1926. Charles Thomas Philpott, Jr. was born there in 1931 and his birth marked the last time Mary Elizabeth Farner Helms Philpott ever went upstairs in the Creek House. Peggy Lee Philpott Cross, Charles and Christine's last child, was born in the Creek House in 1934. After Charles and Christine moved to their new home in the early 1940's, the house was rented to Nick Prillaman who used it for and office and laboratory for a chemical company he was starting. He used the old barn located behind the house and near the creek to produce chemicals until it exploded and burned to the ground. After World War II, the house was rented to Buck Haynes and Clarence Prillaman. It was sold to Robert Haynes and his family who lived there from 1957 to 1982. After they moved out, the house remained vacant for three years, then, in 1985, it was sold to James Gravely. Soon, the house fell in disrepair and in 1992, the bank foreclosed on the property. On July 24, 1992, the newly formed Philpott Descendants Corporation bought the Creek House at public auction.   For many years, the Philpotts and Prillamans gathered on the 4th of July for a fish fry and fireworks at Pine Ridge Cabin near Henry and the Prillaman homeplace. The Creek House provided a place for descendants to gather also. A parade through the town of Philpott and a picnic at the Creek House was later added. Descendants gather at the Creek House at other times of the year also.
