TRIATHLON TRAINING SCHOOL

Swim

Swimming is the most neglected part of triathlon by age group triathletes. Many think that if one has strong bike and run, (s)he doesn't really need to master swimming. If you ever raced in the triathlon with drafting you know that swimming and running are the most important disciplines in the Olympic triathlon.

The most common mistake among triathletes is bringing running / cycling training philosophy to swimming. The technique in water is crucial in order to maximize propelling forces.

Here are some tips how to improve your swimming efficiency.

DO:

* Learn how to swim other strokes besides FR

* Lengthen your strokes

* Try to maintain high elbow (anchor position) throughout the whole stroke

* Lower your head if your legs sink

* Relax during arm recovery, rotate your body

DO NOT:

* Stroke straight back, you don't want to move water backwards but move your body forward

* Kick excessively;learn how to swim with 2-4 beat kick

* Shorten your strokes in order to have fast turn-over

* Swim every practice slow and long
