HOTELS ON PATMOS
Most of the hotels, apartments and studios in Patmos are situated in the Skala of Patmos (where the ferries dock) or in the coastal village of Grikos. In Skala, that is situated in a narrow part of the island the village goes from one side of the island all the way to the other side. In the harbour where the ferries sail in, there is a not unattractive beach, and at the other side of the village there is a small pebble beach that is not too inviting to go for a swim. It is called Hohoiaka Beach, but it is also called Sunset Beach, for obvious reasons. In Grikos / Grigos, where there has been a lot of building going on these last few years, and some new hotels were erected, there is also a nice beach. Outside the high season it can get pretty quiet here and facilities close. Skala on the other hand is always alive, even for instance in September. The few times I have been to Patmos I have always stayed at the same spot, in a studios with a veranda, alongside the main road that leads from one side of the the island to the beach on the other side.
A SPECIAL PLACE - MATHIO'S STUDIOS IN SAPSILA BAY
In 2007 we did it differently and we had booked a studio in the Bay of Sapsila, on walking distance (2500 meter) from Skala, on the way to Grikos. Because we travelled early (beginning of May) lots of hotels were still closed, and finding an apartment or studio just on good luck is a crime. Mathio's studios was opened and looked very nice. The walk to Sapsila Bay we have made regularly and it is fun. We always made a short stop there. In the bay there are a couple of houses, a small church and there is a small beach, where I have really never seen anybody at all. On this spot, on a hill in Sapsila Bay, are the Mathio's Studios. They are not very expensive. There are 5 studios and 2 apartments and prices in 2009 are between 50 and 80 euro.
Jakoumina, the lady that runs the apartments and studios turned out to be a real sweetheart, and such an honestly nice person, and the studio she had reserved for us had the "wauw-factor". It was so tastefully and personally decorated that it felt like a home, and we loved our large balcony with privacy, that overlooked the Bay of Sapsila. The perfect place for a cup of coffee in the morning or an ouzo in the evening. There was a nice kitchen with all the things that you could possibly need, the beds were top, and there was a large bathroom with a good hot shower and plenty of towels. The house was sort of standing apart from other buildings and away from the traffic and the noise. But the best was Jakoumina's secret beach that you can get to through the garden. It is set off the road and it's lovely: the nicest little beach we have seen on the island of Patmos, and we never saw anybody when we were there.
We found the peace and quiet that we are looking for and at the same time were not too far from the Skala. All apartments and studios have a seaview and in front there is a nice garden with flowers and with Jakoumina's vegetable plot. It was a great place to relax.
Thanks again Jakoumina for your friendlyness and your hospitality. We loved the studio, Sapsila Bay, your secret beach and you. Thank you for making us feel so at home. We hope to be back soon :)!!
Note: from the first of June untill mid October another secret can be found in the bay below (Sapsila Bay) when Benitos Taverna opens its doors. Valentino, Caroline Hererra, and Richard Gere have all had dinner here and according to a restaurant guide of Greece this romantic waterfront restaurant is in the top 10 of special places for food and atmosphere. I haven't been there yet (usually I am there in May) but you might want to find out for me!!
