Fish Page

If you want to get some fish or you have already got some but want to know more then this page should help you out a bit.

Before you buy your fish it is important to set up an aquarium about 2 months before the purchase date so that the microscopic algae that gets rid of the chlorine and parasites has time to develop strongly. If you do not wait the 2 months then your fish will suffer a painful death and you will suffer a painful loss of money.

Make sure that the aquarium is suitable for the breed and size of your desired fish. There is no use getting a 10 inch fish tank for a fish that is going to grow 40cm long. Tropical fish will need to be in a heated aquarium so an internal or external heater has to be purchased as well as a filter as tropical fish are very sensitive to parasites and diseases caused by dirty water. However normal fish eg gold fish, may only need a filter as they have been breed to with stand the low temperatures. You will also need to talk to your pet store about what type of food is needed to feed your fish as some fish may need to have live food in cultures. Marine fish are much more expensive than tropical fish as they have much more beautiful colors and are much harder to keep. The tank needs to be large and have a heater, filter and an aerator. Also marine fish live in salt water so salt has to be purchased to put into your tank.

It is suggested that you buy your fish from a licensed pet store as some people that sell fish for private sale may be selling illegally and the fish may also have foreign diseases that could kill you other fish.

It is very important, doesn't matter what breed, to have a lot of plants and hiding spaces. Many fish may eat the live plants so pet shops have produced plastic plants that have a similar texture and shape of real plants. Ask your local pet shop for more information.

Guppies are suggested to first time owners of tropical fish as they are easily breed and are easy to keep. they are found to be an amazing fish as two of the same colors breed may result in a totally different color. It is always a challenge for fish breeders to create new colors.
