Bits and Pieces: Capcom has been generous enough to release information on the various parts of the game that are new to the series.  Some of these pieces of information are assumptions, though.

~ Apparently, characters are identified by their Names and IDs, for example, Ryu is named "Ryu 1/8192".  The ID at the end of the name also represents a hidden power in the person, but to what extent this plays in the game has yet to be revealed.

~ Breath of Fire V takes place in an underground city, to which people abandoned after an environmental disaster struck the surface of the planet.  The city is divided into three different sections: Life Port, which is apparently some type of transportation, Shelter, which is the living quarters, and Lower Zone, which is a group of dungeons that form a maze under the city.

~ The Shelter is protected by a government-sponsored organization known as "Ranger", which Ryu is a part of.  There is also word of an opposing faction known as Trinity, who early on in the game plan to attack the city.  The Ranger logo is on the left, the Trinity logo is on the right.

~ Battles are said to have a few different types of attack options: Magic, Combos and Traps.  It has been announced that all actions will cost you AP, including Magic, Combos, and normal attacks.  Magic has yet to have a lot of light shown on it, other than a few pictures.  Combos are said to work exactly how they sound, different combos will be obtained with different button combinations.

~ Can it be?  Yes!  Capcom has done away with those tedious random battles and has created the ability to see your enemies on the screen.

~ There are two new systems/mechanisms that allow for a fresh and new gameplay, the Positive Encounter and Tactics System (PETS) and the Scenario Overlay System (SOL).

~ The PETS allows characters to set different kinds of traps for enemies before they enter a battle.  This strategy allows the player to get a jump on the enemy and gain certain advantages during the battle.  What kind of traps can be set have yet to be said, but in the E3 movie, it shows one character setting bombs.

~ The SOL system is said to increase the replay value of the game.  Breath of Fire V is said to have a NewGame+ option that will allow players to transfer levels and experience from other files.  And it also said to open up new events and sidequests once you beat the game.
