Books

I love books! I have hundreds of books!

For those of you that are interested, I will be putting down a few words about books which I have read and what I thought about them.

I Capture The Castle, Dodie Smith
I have read this book twice and am thrilled to discover that it has been made into a soon to be released film. This is a very readable and enjoyable book. I thoroughly enjoyed it (twice) and hope the film does it justice!

Dear Octopus, Dodie Smith
This is a play, Dodie Smith's most successful if I remember rightly. It is very readable, despite being a play. It is about a family coming together to celebrate a Golden Wedding. Some of the family members have not seen one another for many years but still feel the strong family ties ... the tentacles of the octopus!

Prey, Michael Crichton
An interesting book, but I wouldn't say it was his best novel.

Dear Dodie, Valerie Groves
This book recounts the story of the life of Dodie Smith who wrote 101 Dalmatians. I have previously read three volumes of Dodie Smith's autobiography and this book has some quite considerable chunks of Dodie's autobiography within it. It does, however, cover the later years of Dodie's life which are not included in the volumes of autobiography I have read so far. I found the descriptions of her time in America and of her Dalmatians fascinating.

The Stephanie Plum Series, Janet Evanovich
I read most of this series (twice) whilst I was away on holiday last year. These books are laugh out loud funny (even on the second reading!). I was chuckling away whilst toasting myself on the beach!

Shelters of Stone, Jean Auel
In May 2002 I was waiting for the book - Shelters of Stone - to be delivered by BOL.com. Impatiently! Some of you may be aware of my fascination with the books written by Jean Auel in the Earth's Children series. I read the entire series about once a year and enjoy the writing as much each time. I waited for about five years for the next book in the series to be written. I was *very* much looking forward to reading it!

The book was delivered and I read it in record time. Oh dear, what a disappointment it was. The new characters are very one dimensional and there is so much descriptive prose about the surroundings and area plus a lot of backtracking to explain things from the previous books, that the actual storyline doesn't amount to very much. *sigh* If I had known that, I wouldn't have spent the money on the hardback version!
